Being underweight and effect on bones

My sister has always been very skinny, she weighs about 6 stone at the most and eats a lot because she hates being that thin. She has no boobs at all and hates what she looks like and really want's to put on weight. She has been to the doctor numerous times only to be told she's anorexic! Which she most certainly isn't.
Now she is getting pain in her hips and pelvis whenever she stands up and the doctor is sending her for x rays and scans of her bones and a dietician and physio and she had a fasting blood test.

I'm quite worried about her, is it possible she has osteoporosis because she is underweight?

It could be a pelvic insufficiency fracture - basically a hairline hip fracture. If that's what it is it will probably heal by itself with rest and/or with the help of prescription drugs which help to prevent loss of calcium from the bones.

If you think she's not getting enough calcium she could take a calcium supplement and ensure she's getting enough magnesium and vit D.

Has she had a bloodtest for an overactive Thyroid gland as she is so thin?

tolittletoolate · 31/01/2014 21:21

I don't think she has had anything, every time she goes to the doctor they tell her she's anorexic and to eat more!
I'll ask her about her thyroid and if it's been/being tested.

Does she have regular periods?

Anorexics get bone problems because of amenorrhea, this article explains why.

Are you sure she's not puking lots of food up, OP?

tolittletoolate · 31/01/2014 21:36

I'm not sure about her periods tbh.
I'm sure isn't puking up after she eats as far as i know but then I don't live with her so I couldn't say for certain. She really hates being that thin though and wants to put weight on.

I had an overactive Thyroid Gland in my 20s and lost a lot of weight despite eating more than usual. My periods stopped too along with many other symptoms but GP put it all down to nerves at first.
