Dr thinks its nothing untoward but said will get it checked out and as referred me for a scan. She said they may give me a.mammogram as I'm 47 next week and this is the age they call u now not 50.

What will the scan involve? Will I be told there and then????

Chat and clinical exam, mammogram (breast is squished between two plates and an X-ray taken x2, slightly uncomfortable because they squish it a bit hard) and probably an ultrasound, just like a pregnancy one. If they can see a solid lump, they might take a little sample from it (sounds horrible, but is actually ok).
You should get the results of everything except any tissue samples on the day, and samples take up to a week or so.. Good idea to take a friend or rellie because it's a bit stressful, but most people come away with good news.
Hope that helps.

You'll most likely get an appointment at the outpatient breast clinic within two weeks. You'll see a consultant, have an unites sound and/or mammogram, then see the consultant again. They may want to take a sample from the lump.

You'll probably be called back either for results (you can sometimes get these on the day) or later for results or a follow up to see if the lump has changed.

I have fibroadenoma so am at breast clinic fairly regularly. Take a book - it's a bit like a series of queues and wear something you can undress your top half easily in. You'll show your boobs to a few strangers. You should be offered a chaperone.

There's a tamoxigang thread I believe where the women are much more experienced than me and are excellent hand holders.

Try not to worry. Most people have to have a lump checked at some point.

Hiya. When I went, they gave me a mammogram, a scan, a physical examination by the Dr, and then, in my case - a biopsy. All on the first appointment. I then had to wait 2 weeks for the results of the biopsy which was also the appointment with the consultant at which I received a diagnosis and plan of what they were going to do to treat me.
Chatting to others, after my diagnosis, I picked up that there were slightly different procedures in different hospitals.

I suggest you have a look in 'General Health' area and find the thread with 'Tamoxifen' in the title. The ladies on there are just lovely, have all either been through, or are going through the worries you have now, and will answer all your questions. Smile

Remember, most lumps aren't cancerous, it's just better to get that confirmed than to worry about it.
