DS aged 13 has had the runs since Saturday. Therefore this is the start of day 4.

  • Day 1 - crampy tummy loose poohs (sorry)
  • Day 2 - he ate nothing and though he took loads of fluids it rushed through him.
  • Day 3 - pharmacist said Imodium ( 2 ) and dry food. He ate about 2 slices of bread and 4 digestive biscuits all day ( no poohs ) DUring the night he had the runs at 1.30 and 6.30
  • Today - Day 4 - he still has the runs and crampy tummy.

What would you advise please ?

He wont eat and is therefore very weak but will drink.

Call into the GP - yet to call back ( next available apointment next Wednesday )

Is he unwell, otherwise? (fever, etc etc)

If he's not unwell, I'd probably go for more immodium, just follow the dosage info on the packet.

If he's unwell, maybe dioralyte and clear fluids and wait it out.

MrsBadger · 01/08/2006 09:54
  • he is right not to want to eat - don't make him
- stop the immodium - it only stops symptoms ie will bung him up, and won't cure the the cause so when he stops taking it it'll start again (grr dumb pharmacist) - give Diaralyte, flat coke and/or lucozade sport rather than plain water, and try boiled sweets - wait it out! - 12hrs after last squit he can have dry toast with honey/ plain biscuits etc (some people give BRAT - banana, rice, apple, toast) - 24hrs after last squit back to normal food if he wants but nothing too rich or spicy.

I also suggest some quality time with the sofa and the dvd player... it's no fun, so wish him well from MN.

I had this a couple of weeks ago with vomiting.
Dont eat anything until he feels like it. Dioralyte was prescribed for me by gp but to be honest it was foul. I just sipped water and had a bowl and the loo while not moving out of bed unless to toilet for fear of coming through.

flat cola.

all the mothers in my family swear by it as do some of the older more experianced HV's i have met.....even been advised to drink it by a Dr.

sounds bizaar bu it really does work.

Oh I missed the bit about him saying he wouldn't eat. If he doesn't want to eat, yeah, he shouldn't. Wait it out, no food, just clear fluids, as MrsB says.

But isn't 4 days rather alarming .... ?
Praps I'd better stop worrying ... I just thought that it was too long

Just wanted to add my support to Mrs Badgers suggestion of stopping the Immodium. It works by slowing down the function of the bowel. That means that all the nasties that the body is so desperately trying to get rid of hang around being, well.... nasty
Also, if your bowel is not working, you feel dire (even more so)
Hope he feels better soon

MrsBadger · 01/08/2006 10:18

really it's only been 2 days - proper diarrhoea didn't start till day 2, and day 3 doesn't count as he was plugged up with Immodium.

I'd make that GP appointment for next Weds in case - it'll make you feel better and you can always cancel if he gets better (which he will).

Thanks all ...

MrsB - 2 days sounds much better than 4
