Having a nightmare! My contact lens has slipped round the back of my eye! Daren't go to sleep!

I'm 95% sure that's what's happened as my eye feels strange and my lens isn't where it should be. I've been on my hands and knees to check I haven't dropped it but haven't found anything. I've put drops in my eye to wash it out but that's not helped at all.

Unfortunately DH is away for 2 nights on business so is not here to help! I don't want to sleep because I don't know what will happen to it. Arrrghhhh - can anyone offer any suggestions for getting it out?

I would keep rinsing your eye

Do it over a bowl - so you don't wash it down the drain

When I used to wear them - if I blinked really fast they would come out....but it was a long time ago

Could it have got folded?

Alipiggie · 31/07/2006 23:08

Ditto what Katymac says, keep rinsing and blinking really hard. It should come out. Mine always do. They normally end up right to one side.Suggest you close your eyelid and massage it to see if you can move the lens back to where it's supposed to be.

yes it can be folded and yes i did find it wwaaayyy in the corner of the eye. keep massaging thu the lid, and 'looking' for it.

jabberwocky · 31/07/2006 23:10

If it is still in there it will be tucked up under your upper lid, usually in the nasal corner. It's a bit hard to get out without help, though. Did you ever flip your eyelid as a child to gross out your friends? That's a surefire way to find it. It really won't hurt you if you have to leave it in there. Most of the time when patients come in who think the contact is still there, it has actually fallen or been flushed out, but the eye is so irritated that the sensation remains. So, regardless, use some artificial tears or rewetting drops to soothe the eye.

LaDiDaDi · 31/07/2006 23:10

It can't go behind your eye. I must be folded up behind your eyelid, this happens to me sometimes an I do what the others have suggested, massage your eye and blink really hard. It will reappear.

I meant to say, "If you have to leave it in until you get help to get it out" Just realized it sounded as if I meant permanently

JanH · 31/07/2006 23:29

I used to hold my upper eyelid up as high as I could and then kind of strain my eyeball around (yum!) and the lens would usually make itself known by falling out. (Mine were gas-permeables, not soft.) If that fails try lower eyelid (but hold down, obv)

Hi, katymac! Was lovely to meet you and your gang last week

NottsMum · 31/07/2006 23:35

I've just been round my neighbour's house (I wandered up the street to see if anyone was still awake!) Anyway, she's been looking in my eye for ages with a magnifying glass to double check and she says she can't see anything.

I feel better knowing that it can't go behind my eye, as that was really worrying me. I'm going back upstairs now to try the drops and massage just be be triply, triply sure it's not there. Thanks a million to everyone for replying. I love this site!

[And on a side note, it's somewhat timely that I'm going for a consultation on Thursday for laser eye surgery. Then this need never happen to me again!]

HURRAH, HURRAH, HURRAH, HURRAH - I'VE GOT IT OUT!!!!!!

I don't know how but it reappeared from the corner of my eye after lots of massaging and more drops.

Thank you all. It means I can now go to sleep peacefully
