Endometrial Polyp

Hi, I'm new here and I'm a born worrier.
At the age of 45 I have had horrendously heavy periods for the last couple of years, so much so that I don't leave the house when it's that time of the month. I've just been diagnosed with a small polyp and I'm scheduled to have a hysteroscopy and a coil fitted at the same time. I have some concerns about the coil in the first instance, but also not sure why I should need it once the polyp is removed, isn't it that, that is causing the excessive bleeding anyway?
I'm not sure either whether the abdominal and pelvic pain is all in my mind, I'm uncertain something so small could cause the pain I experience and because neither my GP or Gynaecologist have mentioned pain it makes me wonder, am I just imagining it? Does anyone else have any experience, and how long did you wait for an appointment, there seems to be no urgency, do I just worry unnecessarily?

Hi shazza
Im also waiting to have this done.in fact i was due to have it done29th nov
but because theyre doing it under ga they wouldnt do it until I've
Seen a cardiologist&had various heart tests done as im having ptobs in that area too!
Ive been getting bleeding in between periods&periods have changed a bit recently
Im46
Seems everythings going wrong in last coupke of yrs!

shazza24169 · 26/01/2014 18:39

I'm guessing you have no answers to my questions then, since you are still waiting.
Do you experience much pain? Have they said whether yours is single or multiple polyps, and size?
Hope you get sorted soon.
I'm reluctant to even mention the pain, even to my husband, because he may think I'm making something out of nothing, it is something quite small after all.

Hi I am having polyp removed this coming Saturday. diagnosed by scan in august, gynaecologist appointment in mid November, now the appointment. I am having D&C to remove it, I have had polyps done this way in past, haven't had one for about 16 years. this way works fine for me, and is relatively non invasive. they will biopsy the polyp, but I did not want endometrial ablation, it's a polyp causing the problem, don't see the need to nuke the lining so if anything goes wrong there in future, no on will be able to tell.

with the previous two polyps I've had, I don't recall any pain. How were you diagnosed, could it be anything else?

personally I wouldnt want a Mirena coil, but that is because I don't tolerate the hormone in it, I had problems with the contraceptive pill. If you aren't sure about it, don't be afraid to refuse to have it, they dish them out freely, it is first choice of treatment for heavy menstrual bleeding if you look at the NICE guidelines, which you can read on the internet.

babyjane67 · 26/01/2014 19:21

I sometines get dull ache/pain down there&in my lower back but its not all the time
Hopefully it wobt be too long before its sorted
The gyny said its obe polyp&when i looked on screen thats all i could see but first transvginal scan i had just couple if wks before didnt show anything other than sone slight thickening in one part
When i wentin for op the dr said we're looking to see what we can find!so i duno!
They havent mentioned what size it is

shazza24169 · 26/01/2014 19:21

Thank you PoshPenny. So my wait hasn't been that long then? I was diagnosed in November by internal scan, saw the gynaecologist 2 weeks ago but I didn't ask many questions because I didn't really understand at the time. I will need to educate myself more about the coil, but I really did think that the cause of the heavy bleeding was the polyp, so won't the removal of the polyp solve the problem? I'm also not keen on the whole hormone thing, I wasn't asked but more told that is what will be happening. mmmm I need to look into all this more I think.

Speaking from my personal experience with the previous two polyp removals, the bleeding stopped once the polyp had been removed. A welcome side effect of the D&C was that my periods were lighter for quite a while afterwards, guess that's where they've had a good old scrape around in there? personally I don't see what having a coil put in would add other than a load of extra hormones.

Artus · 26/01/2014 19:47

I had two polyps removed during an hysteroscopy. I was 51 and bleeding almost continually before hand, with some pain when the bleeding as heaviest.

After the hysteroscpy I had two normal periods then presumably the menopause kicked in and I have no bleeding at all since. I didnt want a coil put in.

For me it was a great result, and it seems to have been the polyps alone causing the bleeding.

GW297 · 26/01/2014 21:11

I've had a hysteroscopy recently for uterine polyp. I had a lot of abdominal pain and now have endometriosis diagnosis. I would ask about this as a possibility if you get pain plus very heavy periods. My gynae offered me a coil but I declined.

Kewcumber · 26/01/2014 21:14

I had a polyp removed - made no differnce ot my bleeding. Mirena coil was a blessed relief I felt silly I'd resisted so long.

nikkihollis · 27/01/2014 00:14

I had 2 polyps removed 2 years ago, due to heavy, irregular bleeding and pain around the left ovary. I was 51 at the time. The irregularity, excess bleeding and pain went away more or less straight away. I'd been offered a coil months earlier (before I had an ultrasound) and had refused (as had read mixed reports and am a scaredy-cat anyhow).

If you aren't sure you want the coil fitted, then you could always have the polyp out, see if the bleeding lightens afterwards and if it's still heavy and bothersome then you could have it put it in at a later date. At the moment it sounds like they're assuming the heavy bleeding is peri-menopause related one of the symptoms of polyps is heavier and irregular bleeding.

Hope the colposcopy settles things down for you.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 27/01/2014 10:13

shazza

I actually thought of endometriosis when I read your initial post due also to the abdominal and pelvic pain (and no you are not imagining that either!). This is also not really an area that a GP would actually specialise at all in.

I have had a uterine polyp and although these can be problematic they are easily removed surgically. Mine was congenital and pumped out hormones disrupting ovulation as well.

The root cause of my pelvic and abdominal pain was endometriosis. I feel you really need to talk to the cons more about the pain and your worries surrounding the coil. its your body so do not be afraid to ask questions!. You will need to be persistent in order to get answers.

I would suggest you keep a daily pain and symptom diary if you do not already do so as this can give the gynae clues.

shazza24169 · 27/01/2014 13:36

Thanks you all for the help, I think I will be better prepared for my next appointment, even if it is to have the hysteroscopy done, There should still be some time beforehand to put my questions forward. It felt quite awkward at my initial appointment, mostly because I think I was just processing things in my mind. I'm sure everything will be ok in the end.

Right then, because I'm new to all this, do I make a new thread or carry on with this one?
I thought I was worried about the hysteroscopy but now that I've been reading about the Mirena coil I'm starting to get more concerned about that now. Weight gain, hair loss, acne, depression, loss of libido....all of these things I can do without in an already stressful life (I am a carer to my husband who has kidney failure, I assist him with his haemodialysis).
Anyway this is about me for once and that's where I'm not very good, having lived a relatively healthy life up until now I guess I'm just not that good with the thought of having to be concerned with my own health so any experiences would be greatly appreciated to help me make a more informed decision, has I said earlier I don't feel like I have been asked if I want the coil, more told this is what they'll be doing at my next appointment and I'm really not sure about it, the more I read....HELP !!

Ok, I had a hysterocopy to remove fibroids and had a mirena fitted at the same time. I'm a similar age to you and had been on the pill for years. I was more or less told the coil would be fitted as at my age I shouldn't be on the pill. I guess I probably should have questioned it and looked into it more but I was just so grateful to be offered a solution to my bleeding problem ( was told a combination of removing the fibroids and fitting the coil would sort it). Mine was also done pretty quick due to going private. 3 weeks on I'm still bleeding so no better off than I was before. However, I've since read that it's common to bleed for weeks (or even months) after mirena but it often settles down eventually. We'll see......

Kewcumber · 27/01/2014 20:56

I had bleeding on and off for about 3 months hilda then no more. To be fair I bled on and off just as much when I went on the POP too.

I got some wegiht gain and spots but again all settled down within 3 months.

If after 6 months it hasn;t all settled down and you don;t like it - have it removed. Personally it revolutionised my life and was a great deal more palatable than having a hysterectomy at 30!

Kewcumber · 27/01/2014 20:59

I'm not sure if it helps shazza but I resisted right until going into hospital (had to have it done under general at the same time as another procedure).

A freind and my sister have both had one fitted, one for heavy bleeding and one for contratrecption. Not a big sample but both extremely happy with it... so again - why not try it? It not a massive step like a hysterectomy would be though I know you can have laser resurfacing (or whatever its called) but thats still a bigger procedure than having a Mirena fitted.

PoshPenny · 01/02/2014 18:08

Well had my sesh under GA at the hospital today, and consultant couldn't find a polyp! Couldn't find anything untoward apparently. very odd. but apart from feeling a bit queasy for a while, it's all been very straightforward and no pain of any kind at all. Guess the polyp either dropped out or withered or whatever they do, or the scan produced a false positive which was consultants opinion. it would explain improvement in bleeding over last 2 months though.

GW297 · 01/02/2014 19:44

How do you feel about that?

babyjane67 · 02/02/2014 09:27

Does anyone get a dragging/pulling pain sensation on left lower side of the abdomen?
It happens when im on period though not constantly&also sonetines when i poo or even wee!
Sorry if tmi but just wondering if its to do with rhe polyp or sonething else
Sorry fir typos but am on phone&its rubbish!lol

GW297 · 02/02/2014 11:34

I get it on the right side. I have cysts on my ovaries and endo. I used to have a uterine polyp too!

babyjane67 · 02/02/2014 13:08

They havent gound anything on ovaries or endo on transvaginal scan.only polyp or what they think is a polyp!

GW297 · 02/02/2014 13:17

Give them time re the endometriosis - I had several TV ultrasound scans before it was picked up. Not saying you have it or anything but please don't rule it out just because it's not been picked up as yet. In my case they treated the immediate problem ie the polyp and then looked at all my other gynae issues. Oh the joys!

PoshPenny · 02/02/2014 14:05

GW a small part of me thinks what a waste of a weekend (not quite up to par today due to the GA and don't feel safe to drive yet) and a larger part thinks well he's had a good look around and can't find anything, but has taken some scrapes for biopsy which he is confident will be fine. he also told me everything looked nice and healthy in there. so, I should be grateful that I have essentially been given the all clear. it was the consultant himself that did the procedure so that also helps.

Very pleased to share that the light bleeding post hysteroscopy has stopped, I suffered no cramping pains or anything else they warn you about on the hysteroscopy sheet.

GW297 · 02/02/2014 15:41

Yes, all the leaflets they give you scare the hell out of me! I'm glad you still feel it was worthwhile and can see the positives. I hope you start to feel better soon too.

babyjane67 · 02/02/2014 16:10

Gw yes they said theyd temove polyp then have good look around to make sure everythibgs ok
then will send polyp off for biopsy
gotta get these blooming heart tests out the way
first!
