Am I over reacting or is this more common than i know? An old school friend who I see for only birthdays and christmas told me last week on a visit that her DD 5yo in oct had to have a filling at the dentist!! DP and I were appalled! surely this isnt right? she puts it down to her DD drinking alot of 'pop' through the night aswel! Please tell me I'm not alone in my shock horror!!

he sounds so good twiglet, i know my son would have bit him or something. you can get things that go on top of the teeth as a sealent once they get adult teeth, i'm definitely going to get them for my son

my ds has tooth decay which my dentist puts down to frequent night bfeeding as we co slept. my dn has recently had 10 teeth extracted at the hospital due to decay, she eats the same diet as her sister and gets her teeth brushed in exactly the same way but her older sister has perfect teeth. Sometimes genes are not kind.

he wasn't so good first time .. dentist just went for it and he lost it

so I took him away and promised him a shopping expedition to toys r us if he could stay still

and then I stayed calm in the dental surgery and he managed it

once he'd gone through the process once he was far better next time and the time after .. because he forgets any discomfort

DS1 has a filling too, don't know if ds2 and ds3 need them as can't get a dentist (Local dentist helpline due to get back to us..... yeah right)

His is from soya milk as a baby, rotted his teeth- one filling, one false tooth but without the soya he'd be dead

mrratty · 31/07/2006 19:06

false tooth! how old is he?

SlightlyFamiliarPeachyClair · 31/07/2006 19:13

6.5

mrratty · 31/07/2006 19:18

I didn't know they did that for children is it an adult tooth then?

SlightlyFamiliarPeachyClair · 31/07/2006 19:24

It's a funny metal childrens tooth- he calls it his robot tooth, will fall out apparently wihen its time comes (soon I would guess- he is losing them fast)

My DS (5) has a filling. As with others he has an average diet, some sweets some fruit juice. He does however have a lot of dried and fresh fruit.

He has a small gap between a couple of his teeth which is hard for us to clean. We are pretty hot on cleaning his teeth as his dad has really really crap teeth (we're talking 2 root canals, 2 crowns and 11 fillings found needed in one check up. His dad is pretty good at cleaning his teeth (a lot better than me) yet I have a 5 minute check up every 6 months and that is normally it.

He was in the dentist chair for 5 - 10 minutes. Dentist asked us to wait outside so we didn't stress DS.

Mind you DS loves going for check ups. He goes with his dad and shoves him out of the dentist chair so that he can have another go on it.

As others have said don't assume it is crap parenting/feeding, a lot of it is not.

when dd was having surgery (gromets), there was a boy in the next bed who was 6. He'd had ALL his teeth removed. The dp said they'd leave iced tea on his bedside table at night so he'd drink it if he got thirsty during the night. Apparently that's what did it. Dentist said all his teeth had to be removed.

Some people just have bad teeth. I had 14 fillings by the time I was 6 despite brushing religiously and probably having a healthier diet than most. My adult teeth are fine and I have only a couple of fillings.
DD and DS1 have both had fillings by the time they were 5 and we have always brushed their teeth really well and their diet is heqlthy enough. No fruit juice etc. The only thing I can think of is that they did have milk during the nights for quite some time, but then I know kids who drink coke for lunch and have no fillings so really think it depends on disposition.

SlightlyFamiliarPeachyClair · 01/08/2006 12:56

There is a genetic thing for strong teeth, yes. Remember reading that.

Cousin's daughter lost every tooth by 5, again soya milk formula. Yet the kids at school who take biscuits as their healthy snack seem to get away with it.

lems, agree with others. it's not always avoidable (tho I agree it's best to try to avoid things that encoruage tooth decay).
My ds1 (7) has had several fillings in his back teeth (not drill away type things, just more a bit of stuff stuck on to make them last better).
His teeth ar very worn away and raggedy. It broke my heart when first picked up on (he was 4) but my dentist said it's not my fault (no pop, not many sweets, no juice in a bottle or anything like that), just genetic and how his teeth are.
So it's not so shocking.
DD (5) and DS2 (3) have OK teeth so far BTW.

Some kids have weak teeth. I have 3 kids - eldest has 4 fillings and he's only 9 - first at 5 yrs of age. I used to be about it but TBH I can only assume that it's not just down to dental hygiene. My DD has the same food/drinks/cleaning routine that DS#1 has and has no fillings and never had any problems at all. She's only 2 years younger.

I have bad teeth and always had as a child. A virtually sugar free childhood apart from fruit and the occasional home-made cake. Rarely had sugary drinks. Cleaned my teeth like a good girl but had fillings.
