Anyone know this? No next of kin?

Hi, being deliberately vague so apologies. If someone with no family came in, and no visitors, who would look out for them in hospital? Get them toiletries or things? Is there a social services division?

I think there are almoners in the hospital who would deal with things like this.

mummylin2495 · 25/01/2014 23:26

I don't think they are called this anymore, but I'm sure there are people on hand in the hospital to deal with things like this

Thank you. Would they do things like get toiletries or chocolate? How do people with no one get their post or feed their cat?

If you have no one, you have no one. Simple as that. Hospitals provide nightware and basic toiletries. No sweets or chocolate.
Other patients visitors may take pity and get you something. Often hand me downs from when patients go home ie bottles of squash.
Sad but true.

MistletoeBUTNOwine · 26/01/2014 04:55

There is usually a neighbour with a spare key IME to feed pets etc. post gets left.

Nerfmother · 26/01/2014 04:57

Thanks. It's quite sad isn't it. I thought there would be some kind of assessment maybe.

The nurses will ask about home as part of discharge planning. If they're well enough to leave hospital but not well enough to go home then a temporary care home/intermediate care bed is usually found.
If their is an animal contact the RSPCA, they can organise temporary foster care for it.

I'm afraid mistletoe is right. if religious then contact local place of worship/hospital chaplin as they may organise someone. .some hospitals have a charity of befrienders. if long stay post can be redirected via royal mail but if they have no one that won't help. again if lomg stay and they can afford it a housekeeper a few times a week might work? just ideas.

Thanks all. I was joining there was something but seems not, only at discharge.
