Can I see consultant privately for initial appointment and then ask for treatment on nhs after?

Hello,
I have few post birth injuries in my pelvic region. Pretty much I have couple of prolapses, full labia tear and damage to perineum. I was referred to physiotherapy for that and abdominal muscle separation and later I was referred to gynecology. I saw gynecologist and she took 1 second look at me and said that I only have one prolapse and if I want she can get surgery on that but not on both because she think there is nothing else wrong, well my Physio and GP confirmed both prolapses so I know I have them. I opted to do more Physio and decide on surgery later mainly not because I don't want surgery but because I am scarred to go with it with someone who looked at me for one second and cant confirm both prolapses that I know I have.
So I researched best nhs trust for me to go with these issues and found that st. Mary's hospital in London is the best. I want to see a consultant there who also works privately. Could I arrange a private appointment with that consultant and if he agrees that I need surgery could I then go to my gp and ask to be referred to the same person through nhs?
Alternatively could I go back to gp and ask to be referred someone else even though I already saw a consultant? I think to avoid 1 second appointments I would rather pay for consultation but not pay for surgery out pocket...

I Am paying to see a private consultant next week about my prolapse, and if anything needs doing I will then go on the nhs waiting list. I am going for a second opinion, I also went privately to see the first consultant but did not overly like the consultant.

Yes and yes. Have done both. Also have had your kind of surgery (2 prolapse repairs, hysterectomy and perenium rebuild)and I think you are right to go for a second opinion You have to be confident your surgeon knows what they are doing. Had the surgery over 100 miles from home on the Nhs in the end, but with the expert I wanted.
Good luck.

I did this last year. The NHS hospital would only allow this if the patient was already registered with them. It sounds as if different hospitals have their own rules so I would phone ahead to check.

Not the most sympathetic but the whole team was very good and the care both as in patient and after was very good.

Hello

I saw a consultant privately with view to getting some gynae surgery done as a private patient, he offered to put me on his NHS list when he saw what I needing doing, I didn't ask he just did it as if it was routine to him, all he said was can I wait 3 months instead of a few weeks

Hope you get sorted

Thanks l4k! I will look her up. Did someone recommended you to her? How did you pick her?
