How do I prop up 5 month old for sleep

DD is 5 months old and has a cold. last night she didnt sleep as her nose was blocked up. Know a pillow is BAD but is there a safe way of elevating her for better sleep tonight?

Something under the legs of the cot?
Ive used a pillow before but under the mattress.

Squarer · 30/07/2006 18:48

Pop a pillow under the head end of her mattress. Medised is good for colds if you are that way inclined btw

Thats great, thanks!! Have got some karvol which I will put on a hanky attached to her mobile. dont know what medised is though

I've used pillow under mattress too. Also have bowls of water to humidify the room.

We used to put books under the legs of the cot at one end. Only thing was DS sometimes ended up in a ball at the bottom!

Have you got olbas oil (just a drop) on a hanky tied to the cot (out of reach), or just a drop on the bottom of DD's grobag/blanket/sheet? That really helps DS. And medised if it gets really bad - as well as paracetamol, it has a decongestant in it I think, but it definitely helps DS get to sleep more peacefully when he's got a cold.

Sorry if you've already done all the above!

Thanks everyone. Will see how I get on tonight with pillow under mattress and decongestant smelly stuff on hanky out of reach!!
Poor lamb, I hate it when theyre unwell.

I used to have junior olbas oil in a bottle warmer on all the time after he'd gone to bed (best use for a bottle warmer imo!!). Medised is a paracetomol based medicine (like calpol) but also has stuff to help clear blocked noses and help them sleep.
Hope you manage a good night tonight

Thanks squarer, and thanks for finding a use for our redundant bottle warmer!

I put a couple of drops of karvol on a tissue and put it under the bottom sheet just above where her head is. I also put the yellow pages or 2-3 thick books under the feet of the head end of the cot so the whole cot slopes as I found both of mine wriggled too much and slid off the pillows anyway.

Poppy - I realise she's probably already in bed by now but have some tips if you like. Prop up whole cot on books rather than just mattress as you can damage the mattress and it might curve which can scrunch up tummy/lungs and make DD uncomfortable. We also bought Sterimar which is a nasal spray with just seawater in it (get from boots, superdrug, independents - pharmacy counter). LOs don't like it but it loosens all the gunk and you just gently squeeze their nose with the tissue - you can get one of those sucker devices but I didn't need to after this stuff.

Hope you have a better night.

we were advised to use karvol/snufflebabe (baby version of vicks) in boiling water in a jug underneath the cot so that the vapours rise up around the cot and into the room and also keep the air moist intead of dry in this hot weather.we also raised the mattress using pillows under it/books under feet instead if suitable.
medised is good but my eldest doesnt sleep on it.he goes hyper on any kind of antihistamine / medicine like that.youngest is fine on it.
good luck.not nice in this weather.is bad enough in the heat let alone with a cold as well.

thanks for all the advice. DD slept better last night. Had the baby version of vicks in the back of the cupboard and used that on a muslin square tied to her mobile. It seemed to do the trick along with an elevated mattress. shes still very snotty, but at least its all coming out now. you dont expect them to get colds in this weather!
thanks again.
