would you mind me asking why your ovaries were removed and why you're on Yasmin (as I assume you don't produce any eggs anymore)?

sorry to be nosy but I know somewhere down the line there is a possibility I'll have my ovaries removed so I wondered what is was like!

doodledo · 30/07/2006 19:45

I am also likely to have my ovaries removed when I start the change. FIS do you mind me asking why you are having yours removed? Mine is because of a possible genetic cancer risk (mum recently died of ovarian cancer ).

foxinsocks · 31/07/2006 12:18

doodle, so sorry to hear about your mum. Have they got the technology to see whether it is in your genes?

Mine is nothing as drastic as that. I have (apparently) developed a major sensitivity (possible auto-immune type sensitivity) to the changes in the hormones that my body produces. So when the progesterone goes up towards the end of my cycle, I get v nauseous, stuffy head, stiff joints covered with a hot, blister type rash. When the hormones drop (or whatever happens when the period starts, can you tell I never concentrated in biology?!!), I get a raging migraine that lasts till my period has gone away (coupled with exceedingly heavy periods with huge clots). So basically, I feel 'normal' for around 2 weeks of every month!

I'm trying the combined pill again now the theory being that if I can find one that I don't react to (they make me feel horribly sick, sore boobs, the works) that I will just keep taking it (tricycling) as it will keep my hormones level and without the changes in the levels, hopefully, I won't react.

If I can't find one that works, then I'm going to ask them to remove my ovaries (it is an option but right at the end of the road iyswim).

Have you considered the Mirena coil - it will keep your progesterone levels pretty constant and you can always have it taken out if it doesn;t work for you.

foxinsocks · 31/07/2006 12:22

this problem unfortunately was triggered by that - I had it last year and had a major reaction to it (seems as though I may actually be allergic to the Levongesterel, the hormone in it!)

suejonez · 31/07/2006 13:09

not such a helpful suggestion then! Sorry.

foxinsocks · 31/07/2006 13:11

it was nice of you to comment!

jules27 · 01/08/2006 12:17

hi foxinsocks, i have just had the Mirena fitted and i feel dreadful. I feel like i did when i was pregnant, (ie bad morning sickness feeling)it says that this could be a side effect , but at what stage and how did you know you had become allergic to the levonorgestrel. I remember being on the pill years ago and having to come off one because it made me feel dreadful and i am now wondering if i too am allergic. When i had my scan the doctor said that i only had one ovary left , (there where two when i misscarried three years ago) he said the body does sometime absorbs them naturally ,so hopefully wont have the problems that you are having.Sorry to ask a question rather than give you an answer.

expatinscotland · 01/08/2006 12:20

The body can absorb an entire ovary?!

Wow! I'd never heard that before! That's incredible.

suejonez · 01/08/2006 12:31

how long have you had Mirena coil?

Mine took about 3 months to settle down, though I can't say the side effects were that bad, mostly a bit of bleeding, a few spots and a little weight gain, all settled within 3/4 months.

jules27 · 01/08/2006 12:46

Yes strange that my body had absorbed it, made him check again when i had my op ,just to make sure it wasnt hiding somewhere. He wasnt at all bother and said it was quite normal ????????????I'd never heard of this before . I only had it fitted on friday and i know that it is early days yet , i just didnt except to feel so bad . The nausea and light headedness is unbearable. Im spotting ,but that doesnt bother me and i,ve had slight cramping. I hate feeling so sick,, when i was pregnant i had dreadful morning sickness and was sick until 23 weeks with my son. So remember the feeling well ,my dr told me then it was all about hormones ,so prehaps i just have to suffer this feeling now and be patience , wait awhile.

foxinsocks · 01/08/2006 14:18

the big sign for me jules is that you have reacted to another pill that way - no doubt (if you get the doc to check or check yourself) it will be one with the same hormone in it so quite possibly, if that's the case, the mirena may not be the one for you!!

I had it fitted and the overwhelming nausea, headaches started fairly soon afterwards. I saw it was a side effect - mentioned it at my 4 week check (when I went back) and they gave me anti-nausea pills (which did nothing) and told me to try my best to stick it out for 12 weeks/3 months because quite often, the side effects calm down after that.

However, mine went from bad to worse - I ended up losing a hell of a lot of weight (around 6 kgs) because I was dry retching all the time and eventually, all my joints started really aching and they were covered in a sort of lumpy, red, blistery rash. I also started feeling really anxious because I was terrified that whenever I went out I was going to throw up and have to come home!! It was awful.

When I went back they took it out and admitted they should have done a thorough check on my contraception history because had they done so, they would have realised that the other pills (like you) that I had reacted to had the same hormone in them.

hello foxinsocks in reply i had my ovaries removed because i had dermoid cysts on them apparently surgeon left small amount of ovarian tissue on right side after second op and i did get pregnant with my second on this but latest scan shows nothing coming off yasmin to check if I am producing any hormones really confused kept in the dark a bit having more tests sorry cant tell you what its like without unsure till i come off yasmin but having them removed was not as bad as feared! recovery was quick first removed by keyhole second open surgery this was where they were able to save a piece hope your condition can be sorted and you do not have to have them removed my first gyny said i would never have children I also had endometriosis and polycystic ovaries but i did go on to have two beautifulbabies have you had a second opinion?
