Advice for dh please...

I have changed my name as I'm not sure dh would be to happy with me asking for advice on her here..

Basically early saturday morning he started with severe stomach cramps and very loose bowels. I spoke to nhs direct and they advised him to have a rehydration drink and to contact them if it got worse. Also to let them know if he became disorientated etc. He was advised to contact his gp this week.

Anyway within an hour of speaking to them he got worse so I called them again. He was doubled over in pain and had started to be sick quite violently. They suggested to me that he goes to a&e esp as there was blood in his bowel movements (sorry if tmi). He wouldn't go but seemed to get better.

Anyway he's been up all night and has told me this morning that there is a lot of blood. This has shocked him and he's off to a&e now.

I have searched the net to get advice etc but can't find alot. He has had slight abdomonal pain over the last year and the gp x2 occasions said it's IBS. He was given medication but it didn't work so he took it no further. (you know what men can be like..)
The net suggests IBS or Crohns disease or an infection of his colon (colonitus.?)..?? Anyone get any experience of either..?? We also thought prehaps food poisoning as he ate something on Friday that wasn't right which he left. (chicken) NHS direct don't seem to think it is.....

I'm quite worried about him, I'm glad he's gone to a&e as finally he's trying to sort things but I thought someone could help me while I wait for news...

He needs to be seen and have tests done, has he had this before?

mrsconcerned · 30/07/2006 09:57

Not this severe. I have asked if there has been blood before when he's had the stomach pains and he doesn't know. Says he honestly never checks.

try not to worry at the mo! food poisioning can be very severe

My grandma used to suffer with ulcerative colitis - it's an inflammatory bowel disease which flares up from time to time. When she had an attack it was very like you describe with the diarrhoea, cramps, vomiting and blood in her stools. She didn't find it easy to control, but had medication to take when she had an attack, and found it pretty effective. There's some information on it here if that helps.

He's done the right thing going to A&E - they will be able to do all the tests he needs to find out what the problem is. I hope you hear from him really soon.

Mrs C - my dd had campylobacter a few months ago. The stomach pain was very severe and she did have some blood (although not a huge amount). Hope your dh is OK.

thanks everyone. wwb, I have read that link, it's very helpful. Thing is so many things give similar symptoms.

It's hard to not worry..I automatically think the worse.

Will a&e do the tests now do you think or will they refer him for later tests or to his gp..??

Any news, MrsC?

Hi, just to thank you all for your help and advice.
Dh came home about 7 hours after he got there ( I didn't go as had dd and dh didn't want us there iykwim). Bacially they examined him, gave him blood tests, an ecg and an xray. Nothing came from any of those. They admitted him to the ward and he was seen by a consultant. They can't see anything "serious" but suggest it may be food poisioning so they need a sample from him to confirm. Apparently he needs to take this in tomorrow as a&e gave him co-codomal which stops you from "going". Typical..! But suppose he needed it for the pain.

He seems relieved that it's nothing serious and is due to go again tomorrow to drop off the sample.

The said, FP will clear itself eventually but if there is still blood in future samples then he will need to go for further invasive tests which don't sound nice but must be done I suppose.

The said the mild pains he's had over the last year are possibly IBS so no concern there. Think this has given him a shock and hopefully a wake up call. Typical men eh..! ill and they won't do much about it..

Once agian thanks for your valuable help and advice. xx

poor bloke (and poor you). Make sure he sends off the sample just in case it is one of the nastier food poisoning bugs.
