Toothache

I had a tooth extracted before Christmas, I was offered root canal but I couldn't have it done. I have had really chronic toothache since. The dentist said there is nothing showing up on the x ray and to try Sensodene tooth paste. I have been taking Nurofen plus, paracetmol ( not together ) 3 times a day, honestly I am not a wimp when it comes to pain but it's really dragging me down.

Where is the toothache? How is it related to the tooth you had taken out (because you can't have toothache in an extracted tooth)? Which tooth was it?
Are you taking ANY medication at all whatsoever?

Olbasoil · 22/01/2014 09:44

I was hoping you would reply Mrs Morton.

The tooth I had extracted does not hurt ( or rather the gap were the tooth was) The pain is on the same side as the extracted tooth, all along the left hand top of the jaw line. It is sometimes all day, but niggly rather than tear jerkingly painful. That pain starts around 4pm. I am only taking Nurofen plus or paracetmol, this worries me, as I know you shouldn't take these long term. I have been back to the dentist and she couldn't find anything wrong, even when I jumped when she used a instrument to check and blew air around my teeth. I can brush my teeth, no blood is present when spitting out.
I have an appointment with the hygienist on Monday.

Do you think it could be related to your sinus? Have you had any stuffiness on that side? Inflamed sinuses can cause sensitive teeth.

Olbasoil · 22/01/2014 18:19

No, my sinuses are clear. Do sensitive teeth really cause that much pain? If so, mine really should get a grip !
Thank you for coming back to reply

Sensitive teeth can be nightmare. Have you tried anything for them like sensodyne or oral B pro expert or whatever? They do actually work I'm told so might be worth a try. It would be very unusual to get toothache in more than one tooth at a time so when it's generalised like that, it's possible that it's not tooth ache like a cavity or whatever.

Olbasoil · 22/01/2014 20:57

I have just googled sensitive teeth and have just read about periodontitis. This could be possible as I haven't kept up with dentist visits ( just couldn't afford it) but now that has changed I can hopefully sort it out. I'm gld I booked the hygienist now. Feel really embarrassed and cross with myself though.
Thanks again for your help.

Urgh. Feeling for you, Olbasoil, toothache is the worst! I was up in the night with it for over an hour, nearly in tears.

I declined a root canal and had a tooth out 2 weeks ago and it's starting to cause me trouble.

It's getting sensitive around the gum and yesterday I noticed that there's a hard bit in my gum at the side of where the tooth was extracted. Apparently it could be a shard of tooth or even bone left behind from the procedure. It's good that nothing is showing on your xray. I'm bracing myself to have to go back, hoping it isn't one of my other teeth causing the problem. There's also a dark pinkish patch that looks different to the rest of the healing gum, so I'm hoping I haven't got an infection. :(

No pun intended, but I hope you get to the root of the problem soon and get sorted out and pain free.

Olbas healthy gums are absolutely key to this, if they are inflamed then sensitivity is a fairly common symptom. Get to the hygienist and take on board what they say so you can maintain things yourself and all will be well.

Olbasoil · 22/01/2014 21:14

Thank you , I hope yours gets better soon. I have had root canal on a different tooth years ago, the dentist told me it's getting loose. That isn't the one that's giving me trouble though.
