Do these eye symptoms ring any bells?

I have always worn glasses (since I was 3) Am now 43. I am long sighted with astigmatism. Wear contact lenses and glasses. until recently managed fine.

Last year dx with coeliac disease. Dunno if that has affected things or something else.

Basically for a while my eyesight feels a lot worse. I can't read a normal book in bed e.g.. Put it down to age.

But now I can't really see many things. Often feel like everything is a bit blurred or unfocussed. Sometimes very blurred. Then sometimes not at all and normal, for me anyway. And I feel very sensitive to light. Any overhead light is painful. If I'm driving I usually have to wear sunglasses even on a cloudy day.

Today I had to get my dc to read out a form I had to fill in. Had eye test recently and got the same prescription/result as I've always had.

Should I go to a GP or an ophthalmologist or just put it down to ageing.

Can diet or illnesses affect the eyes like this? Thanks

First stop should be an optician ASAP.
What you are describing is not normal for 43. I am the same age as you and one friend has just been diagnosed with cataracts, another with glaucoma.
At our age we should get our eyes checked at least every two years.

I have non coeliac gluten intolerance and has multiple impacts on my health and well being including very dry eyes.

You may want to read this about Celiac Disease and Sjogren's Syndrome.

I had my eyes lazer treated a few years ago the surgeon said my eyes were extremely dry. They are so dry I could never wear contacts.

I have very similar symptoms with recurrent uveitis/ iritis. It could be that, but the fact is, it could be anything- it's not 'normal' and it needs to be checked out. ASAP.

Go for a check at an indie optician. You probably need reading glasses, hence not being able to see the form or read easily. I'm pretty sure your distance prescription will not help focussing close up. Presbyopia happens to us all. My dh is a myope, so he removes his glasses to read, but no such luck for the long sighted.

There's also other stuff that needs to be discussed about light sensitivity. The optician should refer you to the relevant service if needed, which may be your GP. If you go straight to your GP they may ask you to to go for a sight test, so that's why I suggest you go again to the optician. I know you have had one recently, but eyes can change quickly at our age.
