Itchy nipple, lump and referral to breast clinic

Hi everyone, I would really appreciate anyone else's experiences, advice or just hand holding.

I have had an itchy nipple for the past few months, this has been followed by an aching breast, armpit and arm. I wasn't too worried as had always been told pain equals nothing serious. Put itchiness down to age (42) and hormones. But then felt a hardened area in breast, large breasts so not easy to feel. I mentioned it to the gp and she could feel a lump.

I have been referred to the breast clinic, my appointment is on Wednesday morning and I have no idea what to expect. I will be on my own but I don't mind that.

I have googled, wish I hadn't but realise that there are all sorts of things this could be, plenty of them not serious.

Any idea what will happen at the hospital? Anything it is best to wear etc? Will it take long or be over in minutes?

Hi, I am going through something similar at the moment. Pain and thickening in one breast, went to GP and have also been referred to the breast clinic. Have had to go private route due to 6 week wait on NHS in my area, just waiting for my appointment to be confirmed but hopefully in the next week...the waiting is horrible :-( Sorry I can´t tell you what to expect but please let me know how you get on as I am very anxious myself. I assume that they will carry out an exam and then mammogram or ultrasound and then depending on that a biopsy, but as I said no experience of this myself yet. I posted on here a few days ago as I was feeling really anxious and got some good advice so hopefully someone with more experience will be along soon...x

Hi I've been through this recently too. In my case they did an exam, followed by a mammogram. As the mammogram showed nothing to be worried about I was sent home. Had anything come up the next stage would have been an ultra sound the same day.

It was all over very quickly, was there less than 45 minutes (grr that I put so much on my parking ticket!). The mammogram took about 5 minutes. Then I waited about 15 minutes whilst drs looked over it.

Thanks for the replies. I'm glad all worked out well for you ifcats Smile
Must admit it was how long to put on the car park ticket that made me ask how long it's likely to take Grin

I will report back F1 it is a worrying time isn't it? Hopefully you will get a quick appointment, maybe even sooner than mine. It's the waiting that's the worst and the googling.

Yes the waiting sucks. I just knew if I only put an hour or two on the car I'd be there all day. £7 I put in grr. Gave my ticket to someone else on the way out but was still a bit peeved!

Good luck tomorrow OP. I have had breast pain on one side only for nearly two years. Have had two US and a mammo both of which revealed nothing and was sent away with a leaflet on non cyclical breast pain and told to take EPO. I still get breast pain now and it still worries me.

Hope tomorrow goes ok. The mammo isn't as bad as you think x

Good luck with your tests. The waiting is a miserable time. Try going onto the breast cancer care uk website, there is a forum where you can chat to others & a helpline which is great for support & correct information.
Best wishes Thanks

Turvytopsy · 22/01/2014 17:21

Thank you so much for the support and good wishes. Everything appears to be fine, I have also been told to take EPO if the pain persists.

F1 the mammogram was completely painless, not even uncomfortable really. The staff were kind and explained everything fully. If anything worrying had shown up on the mammogram I would have gone on to have a biopsy today but as it was, all ok so I was discharged. It took about 40 minutes in total from arriving to leaving. I really hope you get a similar result on Friday. The waiting really is the pits.

Great news turvy, I am delighted for you! Good to know that the mammogram wasn´t too bad either, thanks for your good wishes, hopefully I will have a similar outcome on Friday, will let you know.

Theonlyoneiknow · 22/01/2014 22:30

Did they say what was causing the pain?

Turvytopsy · 23/01/2014 23:17

Good luck tomorrow F1. I will be thinking of you. Let us know how it goes.

Theonly, no I don't think they know what causes the pain.

How did you get on F1?

I also went to the osteopath and the pain did subside after that for a while but it's now back. Don't know what to do

f1chick · 27/01/2014 11:08

Hey sorry for the delay in updating you it was my son's birthday at the weekend so it went by in a bit of a blur! Pleased to report everything fine, had an ultrasound and its just normal breast tissue with a couple of small cysts...very relieved!
