Uterus lining too thick - worried

friendlymum67 · 16/01/2014 12:15

Had a scan after some 'abnormal' bleeding a few months ago and have been told that the uterus lining is 11mm instead of the benchmark 5. Being referred to gynae for hysteroscopy and I could cry. Needless to say I have googled and googled and now very worried!

Anyone else had a similar experience with positive stories?! Please!

I had bleeding recently too and drove myself mad with Google. However, cancer (which I assume you're worrying about) is very rare pre menopause which I assume you are? I thought the 5mm thing was mainly for postmenopausal women and there was a much wider range of normal in those who still menstruate. I ended up with a hysterocopy too, although my lining was only 2mm due to years on the pill. I did have fibroids though that were removed. Try not to worry (hard I know) as there are many non serious reasons for your problem and damn Dr Google always draws you to the worst case scenario.

What point in the cycle was the scan? Around 10 would be optimal around ov time as far as I know.

hildaogden99 · 16/01/2014 15:18

Yeah I remember reading around 10ish was normal at some points in the cycle.

Also during my googling i stumbled across a forum of people who were ttc & they were worrying their linings were too thin - most of them were well over 5mm

Mine was recently measured at 14mm (referral for heavy periods and Mirena falling out!)

My consultant said whilst that was 'quite thick', it wasn't unduly concerning in a pre menopausal woman. I've just had a hysteroscopy and an ablation done this last weekend, and she doesn't need to see me again.
I am finished with having babies though!

Please don't worry. I had abnormal bleeding and a transvaginal scan revealed a womb lining of 22mm. I had a hysteroscopy and D & C. The biopsy revealed nothing sinister. However, I ended up having an endometrial ablation which took care of the bleeding.

NoelOfLorst · 16/01/2014 18:36

willy do you mind me asking if the ablation sorted out the bleeding straight away? Gone completely or just reduced?

willyhaschips · 16/01/2014 19:33

Yes, the ablation stopped the bleeding completely (after 18 months of virtually continuous).
Unfortunately it's back again since I started HRT...but on a normal scale :)

That's good to hear, thanks Smile

Ladies, thanks for all your replies Smile, very reassuring to know I'm not alone.

Hilda - I think I am known as peri-menopausal. I am 46 and been having erractic/irregular periods for the last 7 years. Previous to the recent bleed, I had had nothing for 15 months so was kinda thinking I was well on the way to being post menopausal!

I bled for approx 5 weeks and then it stopped and have had nothing since. No history of heavy or painful periods and even with the abnormal bleeding, there was no pain etc.

From what I can gather, it is my age and the lining that gives cause for concern, hence the hysteroscopy and biopsy. Is a biopsy always taken during hysteroscopy??!

I alternate between calm rational thinking and total panic!! Dr Google doesn't always reassure me, whereas you lovely ladies have been wonderful Thanks
