I have some specific questions about the mooncup ....

Hi ... am regular poster but have recently had to change my name permanently due to creepy stalker thing happening (via email and phone)
Suffice it to say, I live in NZ and was pale and floaty and now I am brown and stinky

Anyway ... the mooncup. There is a thread about scented tampons where someone posted a link to the mooncup site and I am now very interested (I have heard about it loads on here but wasn't really convinced before). The thread has some interesting points re. the mooncup but it is long and I had some specific questions that I hope someone could answer for me as I see they deliver worldwide so I am thinking of ordering one:

  1. Has anyone tried one and NOT got on with it very well? If so why not?
  2. Sizing ... the site had a very interesting section about sizing depending on age and whether you have had kids and how you gave birth. But I remember when I was fitted for a diaphragm that my doctor was very specific about size and I recall that your weight came into it as well (the larger you are the smaller the diapragm). I am wondering how only two sizes of mooncup could fit all women? I am over 30 and have had 2 c/sections but use regular size tampons (not a huge foof iyswim??
  3. Is there a 'vacuum' effect when you take it out? ... I think that is what I feel a bit 'ick' about - didn't like the diapragm for that reason ... the sensation was horrible ...
  4. What if you have really heavy periods? Mine are pretty heavy for a couple of days (need to change tampon every 1 - 2 hours ....
  5. Can you/do you wear it at night (I currently use big nighttime pads at night) ...

Ta in advance ... sorry for all the blushes ... but I am not good at discussing personal stuff

I'm sorry that you've had such problems, QoQ.

Hey, at least you have a good reason for not having sex. Some people simply have no sex because they can't stand each other

Thanks FZ - as I said DH has been incredibly supportive and not at all pushy - no matter who initiates in the bedroom he always asks "how far" (or something along those lines) as some nights I just know I'm not going to be able to relax enough.

Mind you - working 3 nights a week means the opportunities for saying "I've got a headache" are greatly diminished - no excuses needed as I'm not there LOL.

That reminds me of a joke I read in "That's Life" a few weeks back.

A woman is lying in bed when her DH walks in with a glass of water and some paracetomal (sp). She asks what they're for and he says "They're for your headache"

She replies - "but I don't have a headache"...................

Just to answer Dior's question about Boots, I had a bit of a struggle finding one in Boots. I eventually found it on the very bottom shelf right at the end, under the tampons. Practically hidden! Obviously, the fact that Boots do own-name tampon and STs has nothing to do with it at all.

I have had problems with my Mooncup - I've tried it over the last two periods. It does seam to collect most of the blood, but there is some leakage and I have had to use a towel too. I also have very heavy periods for the first couple of days and my nights have been easier with the mooncup because before I would be woken by the leaking sensation even with boulder sized tampons and a large pad. However both times I got fed up with it after a while because it's not 100% effective and for example last week we were at the beach - I went in the sea with the lo's and came out with watery blood . That was when I thought sod this and bought some tampons.

Having said that I'm going to persevere because i like the idea of it. Seeing the blood is strangly interesting and I don't find it yukky. There is a bit of a squelchy noise when you remove it, which is a bit embarassing in a public loo, but you can cough or something.

Although I've had three babies, I don't think my pelvic floor is too bad - not what it was - but DH says no difference (maybee self interest?) so I'm hoping its not to do with slackness . Will look at the link earlier to see if I can pick up tips.

Anyway - it's worth giving it a go.

i've had some leaking too (three cycles in) and think it is positional problems. had major loss of patience this morning, v hormonal with a toddler trying to take my trousers off by jumping on them and replacing wretched mooncup for fourth time in an hour. am also off to read that info.

I know that Dior is possibly still on holiday but I have just got my first mooncup (after thinking about it for ages!). Very impressed with the website as ordered it on B Hol Monday and had it by Thursday. Been quite impressed so far but had a bit of a panic this morning as couldnt get it out and could feel myself getting a bit tense which obviously not helping! I seem to have a problem breaking the seal as well as pinching doesnt seem to release it. Any tips please ladies! I'm not using at the moment (gave myself a bit of a scare this morning and had images of DH trying to get it out by bracing himself against my inner thigh - but luckily got it out eventually! Otherwise think it is great so far and feel much better about using it than tampons especially overnight.

TIA

I'm on my third cycle of using the mooncup and can't praise it enough.

I've had 5 vaginal deliveryies so extra large bucket size was the one for me!!

Seriously though - I found that positioning it as high up as possible felt better for me; I haven't trimmed the stalk but if it's high enough I don't feel it. If it's too low it rubs uncomforably.

Re the suction getting it out - I have found that pinching it in at the same time as twisting it slightly helped with releasing it. I usually change every 6 hours and have not yet had a spill despite it being quite full. Doing it over the toilet gives a bit of extra reassurance that it won't spill everywhere.

The only downside for me has been that to get it in as high as I mentioned above, I have to remove my trousers and bend one leg up onto the side of the bath. Ok when I'm at home but I haven't had cause to change it when out. I now know that I can easliy go 6 hours before needing to change though so that is comforting that I won't ever be too far from home.

p.s. I would never go back to using tampons now.

Great thanks. Have caught up with the other zillion MC threads on here and picked up some tips. Panicking and just yanking at itwas probably the worst thing I could have done but was due to go out and get legs waxed so didnt want to be late either!

Thanks

mooncup is awesome but if you have vaginismus you are going to have a major issue with any menstral cup. suggest you get a Vagi-Wave first as this will sort out and get rid of any issues you have. got mine and after 4weeks the problem went away as if it was never there to start with. now i use one, have sex, smears and go to family planning. yes it is that good, so get one so you can live a full life the way you want with no hang ups now or in the future. its that good my mum has Vagi-Wave after prolapse surgery to get things moving in the bedroom, she swears by it too, we are close and I like that as I am fore warned about all womens hassles in advance. Vagi-Wave is fab !

Hmm this thread is over 6 years old

JustAHolyFool · 23/01/2013 23:29

To answer your questions:

  1. I found it fine from the first period.
  2. My vagina is tiny as hell, so it was a no-brainer for me.
  3. There is a bit of a vacuum thing for me. If you give it a good squeeze, it's normally ok.
  4. My periods aren't horribly heavy, but need to change tampons every couple of hours on the first day. I find I need to change the mooncup less often and on light days barely at all.
  5. Yes, I wear it at night with no problems but maybe a pad with it would be good for the first couple of periods.

It's really helped me a lot, I couldn't recommend it more.

bluecarrot · 23/01/2013 23:33

I tried mine once a few years ago and then it sat in a drawer. Just found it while clearing out and decided to try again. Never been so eager for my period to come :)
