Help please. Anyone had their driving licence revoked by the DVLA for ridiculous reasons?

I have anxiety and am on fluoxetine, very occasionally a tiny dose of diazepam (maybe twice a year). Unsurprising since my mum is dying. I was stupid enough to check with the insurance company who said this is fine as long as I tell the DVLA. So I duly phoned up the medical information line who said I had to fill in a form. I duly filled in the form and assumed that would be the end of it.

So today I get a letter saying that my licence has been revoked as "it is clear from information received that" I have "suffered a psychiatric illness". WTF? I have mild to moderate anxiety, which is being treated. If I had dementia apparently that would be OK.

What the hell is going on here? Has this happened to anyone else? Or was I just extremely stupid to declare this at all?

To top it all my Mum is in a hospice 4 hours away, my DH is too ill to drive (but hasn't had his licence revoked strangely enough) and I need to get there. What on earth do I do?!

And of course what they're not taking into account is that if I am in the middle of an anxiety attack (which is not happening now that the fluoxetine is working) I am not going to drive!

It's like banning someone from driving because they occasionally have a glass or two of wine, just in case they drive under the influence. They may as well ban nearly every adult in the country!

I had to inform the DVLA about a medical condition, when I was dx with it the hospital told me I had to declare it. I was very nervous waiting to hear, my use of the equipment is monitored with a card so the hospital know I am using it. I can drive as long as I use the equipment supplied by the hospital. I was warned if I don't use the equipment the hospital will notify DVLA. Now here is the thing, DVLA write to your Dr, I think your Dr has caused this for you. If I were you I would put in a subject access request to the DVLA and find out what your Dr has told them.

Yes I think I will. The other possibility is that my doctor hasn't actually responded. I did get a letter a few weeks back saying that they hadn't heard from the GP and had sent a reminder. I'm wondering whether this overreaction would be triggered by not receiving the information?

Well, would you believe it was all a mistake! All sorted today by my GP and I can drive again! What a couple of days.

Fantastic news, so pleased for you!

FattyNewYear · 18/01/2014 22:09

What a relief for you! Thats great news.

Iamlivinginanightmare · 19/01/2014 08:40

Yes, it's a massive relief. Normally I would still be furious about what happened. Given that I do have stress and anxiety issues, who's to say this couldn't have tipped me over the edge? It goes to show just how poorly these kinds of things are handled by Govt agencies. Just one more example of inhuman treatment of individuals. But right now I have other things to worry about so I'm just relieved it's sorted. And they did redeem themselves by rectifying it so quickly, thank God!

Hi. I have just received the same letter today. I am prescibed 4 x 2mg tablets daily and have been for around 15 yrs. I have recently had a new GP and since then i have had to have my licence reviewed 12 monthly instead of 36 monthly as i was in the past (every 3 yrs for 12 yrs due to a 1 time epeleptic fit).
I dont know what to do as i need my lucence for my job and i have never had a accidebt on the road ever. What do i need to do? Ring dvla and had no help. Shall i speak to my GP?

Kittykat7 · 06/11/2014 17:38

Glad to hear that it's all sorted now.

1978lukep · 06/11/2014 21:51

Hi. Can you please help on how you got your licence sorted out. I am in the same situation as yourself and am worrying to death about loosing my job. I rang dvla who were very unhelpfull and my doctor is not being much help at all. I have not yet told my boss i have lost my licence and dont know who to ring or speak to to help on the matter.
please can you shed some light on the matter.
thank you in advance :)

You'd be better to start your own thread, 1978. As you can see, many people only read the first and last posts, rather than responding to you. As this is an old thread, the original poster is unlikely to reply.

Good luck.

The DVLA are spectacularly unhelpful. Since this post was written I've had my licence revoked too.

My advice would be to anyone - don't tell them anything!
