Ds's nappies smell so strongly of ammonia it makes my eyes water - should I be concerned?

Does it indicate that his urine is too concentrated, for eg? He drinks as much as I can get in to him. (He is one week off his first birthday btw). Particularly bad first thing in the morning, but noticable at other times too.

Is he always thirsty, not just now but when its cooler?

I think this is normal, probably, if he's generally well. I'd avoid putting your nose in his nappies.

(The hot weather will be drying out the nappies, leaving less water in them and more urea etc.)

You haven't changed brands, have you? I usually use Tesco's own, but whenever I used the free samples of Pampers that I got occasionally, I used to find that when they wee'ed (sp?)it smelt really strongly of acetone, like nail varnish remover. Just seemed to be something in the nappy.

my nose goes as far from his nappies as possible - but even changing him at arms length makes my eyes water!

No he's not always thirsty - I give him drinks regularly and there is always water available, but I have to say his nighttime nappies are not that wet. I did wonder if it was due to the weather but can't remember if they smelt so strongly before the heatwave

Sounds like the hot weather

DS's night nappies are the same. Sometimes they're so bad that my throat hurts after rinsing them . He drinks and wees loads though, so I'm sure he's getting plenty of fluids. I just run the sink full of water, throw it in, and then rinse it through later when it's diluted a bit!
