How long does an abscess take to clear after a root canal?

After much guesswork as no pain from any teeth, I had root canal work done last week on a back molar.
The abscess at that point was underneath the 3 back teeth, the third from the back had already had root canal a few months ago and the dentist was quite sure it wasn't being caused by that due to the position of the abscess.
The tooth he's done the work on no longer has the abscess underneath it, it has def got smaller but is still very much there towards the very back tooth.
It's not sore and as awful as this sounds, as it was done under sedation I can't exactly remember how long he said to leave it before being concerned the back tooth may also have an infection underneath it.
I know he said the filling on that tooth looked very close to the nerve ( not sure if this means more likely to get an infection ? ) but that he was pretty sure it was the tooth he guessed as underneath the filling he removed was lots of decay.
I remember him saying I didn't need antibiotics and to use salt water, I'm back in 10 days for the 2nd part, any dentists who can shed some light?
Thanks

Bumping as well. I have a painless abcess that can't be treated while I'm pregnant, and in the meantime I have become quite interested in learning anything about them in the hope it will eventually help me get rid of mine! I hope you manage to get yours sorted quickly slightly

Op, I had this very same thing done this week. After months of taking antibiotics, and having a very tender gum line where the abscess had found a way through to the outside of the gum and had repeatedly burst, mine was root filled on Wednesday. The following morning it was already feeling better, and today, I had totally forgotten about it until I saw your post.
I've just checked in the mirror, and there is now no external sign it was ever there. I have no tenderness and can bite with that tooth again.

'Tis gone. Cured. Hurrah! Grin

That's brilliant.
Mine has gone down but is def still there and actually feels harder than it did before?! Although not tender now unless I'm prodding it.
