Not used to sick kids - how do I deal with vomity toddler?

DS1 was hardly ever ill at this age.
DS2 is 21 months and has been vomiting every half hour (except for 2 hours asleep) since 4am.

He vomits when I give him a drink. What should I do to help him?
At what stage should I involve doctors?
He feels hot too.
I've got it too, but haven't actually puked as yet

yes may be gastric flu

Clarinet60 · 03/03/2004 18:22

Thanks. He's listless too, and cries with each bout now, so must be really hurting. Will take temp then ring up.

Droile, the best thing to do is only give v. small sips of water at a time. 1 teaspoon every 10 minutes or so. Any more than that and it's likely to come back up. Stomach bugs are the worst thing. I hope you all feel better soon xxx

I'd avoid A&E if remotely possible. They will just make you wait for hour upon hour and then try to make him drink rehydration fluid which he will bring up and then you'll have to wait several more hours - guess who went to A&E to support a friend with a vomiting toddler? He was fine - it was a 24hour bug (lots of them around) and was more upset by being poked by drs than anything. I'd stop giving him drinks for a little while - just a teaspoon or two as Evita suggests. If he stops vomiting (ie he isn't given drinks) he might sleep and that will help him fight it off. Poor him and poor you

My DS1 and DD2 have just recovered from a sickness bug - took about 3 days for each of them, only sickness - no diarrhoea though. Both had raging temperatures and both cried just before being ill, complaining of stomach ache and/or headaches.

For both of them I just cut out food - offering water only. They both slept a lot as well.

DS1 has just gone back to school today (also had tonsillitus as well) he has made a 100% recovery and is back eating/drinking properly.

DD2 has recovered from sickness completely but is still off nursery probably until next week now as her impetigo is no better

I went back to work at the nursery today (whilst my mum looked after DD2) to be greeted with Slapped Cheek infection/nits/sickness and diarrheoa - ho hum

Oh no. I think the bug may be heading this way. My dd complained of feeling sick, last night and this morning, and i've felt queasy all day. Also when i picked dd2 up from nursery a friend of hers had been sent home at lunch time because she'd been sick and had diarrhoea

Droile, sounds vile and I'm sure it is. You could also try getting him to suck ice cubes to get some water down him but slowly. What was his temp? Can he keep Calpol down? Poor him and you, I hope the morning brings better news.

Clarinet60 · 03/03/2004 23:28

Good advice, thanks. I haven't tried calpol yet, he's finally gone to sleep now, will see what morning brings. Sips of water & ice cubes are a great idea, thanks

He managed to keep liquids down in the night and is now just hot and listless. Temp is only 37 though.
