Does ANYONE know if they are the same thing???

Psycomum5 posted this link www.stars.org.uk/

I don't have one for intrapulmonary shunting but you can google it and the symptoms are similar, to say the least

I don't know....really. I am bumping for you as you clearly sound confused and upset by this.

can I ask why???

soapbox · 26/07/2006 00:18

Sorry for butting in - but IIRC her baby died at 9 weeks old from intrapulmonary shunting

Sorry if it is bringing back awful memories

psychomum5 · 26/07/2006 00:24

ahhhh, I am soooo sorry. I understand why you are sounding so scared.

Please except my sincere sympathies jellynump. I had no idea.

I so wish I could do or say something to help you....you sound so in need.

So sorry for you loss Jelly. I would very much doubt this is the same thing although I don't know for sure. My ds was very recently diagnosed with RAS and I was assured by the doctor that there is no way he could die from it. She said that the brain always, always kicks in and they start to breathe. I'm sorry if my original post on this matter brought back terrible memories for you, I didn't mean to upset anyone. xxx

Yes, Soapbox, thats me. My son died at 9 weeks old. The main symptom he had had while alive and we didn't really know were linked to the condition was he seemed to hold his breath when he cried, also the fact he was premature and I think I read somewhere that prem babies can have a tendancy for Intrapulmonary Shunting.

I emailed Professor Fleming, who we have been meeting here in Bristol (he works with The Bristol Childrens Hospital which is linked to St Michaels where my son and daughter were born and he studies cot deaths, sleep apnyia, neonatal conditions etc etc)
he emailed me back this response:

The relationship between "reflex anoxic seizures" and the type of episodes from which Jesse suffered is something we have been investigating for some time.
The precise nature of the episodes in "reflex anoxic seizures" is unclear, but commonly they do cause severe episodes very similar to the one that caused Jesse to die.
Probably the two types of episode are variants of similar processes.

I have also emailed this to the lady at the STARS website.

I'm really worried now if they 'commonly cause severe episodes' like the one which caused your son's death. The only thing keeping me sane in this is the reassurance that it isn't something serious. Don't know what to think now.
