Septicaemia following prostrate biopsy

FIL is in hospital being treated for septicaemia following a prostate biopsy last week. Sad I am so worried about him, he is the nicest man and the best FIL/grandfather to DS that I could have wished for, and only in his 50s. Has anyone experienced this? Is it common? We are only getting 2nd hand, muddled information from MIL as they are in a different part of the hospital and she is not in a medical profession. I have some medical knowledge but am not a doctor.

Infection after a trans rectal biopsy is def not uncommon, and unfortunatly around 2% of men who have a biopsy transrectally will end up in hospital due to infection.

Hopefully the effect of the IV antibiotics that he'll be being given will kick in soon.

Thank you. Septicaemia just sounds frightening - is the prognosis ok assuming no complications? We were nervously awaiting the biopsy results, wasn't expecting to be worrying about things at this stage!

I don't know about prognosis, sorry. I spend a huge amount of my professional life around prostate cancer and one of my lovely customers gave me a detailed presentation about infection rates in biopsies as part of some work, so I was able to look the infection rate bit.
