salmonella meningitis

most people dont know you can catch salmonella from reptiles;iguanas turtles ,snakes,terrapins any reptile in fact,whilst quite rare it is possible,and can develop into salmonella meningitis,my grandson died in october from salmonella meningitis,he was ten weeks old.if i can save lives by making people aware then i will have achieved my aim

Was he bitten by one of these animals?

Many animals have/had resistance against illnesses such as salmonella, and could eat infected food without getting infected themselves. But I guess they could be carriers and still transmit the disease.

A few years ago a large part of the population of vultures on Gran Canaria got ill with salmonella food poisoning, they had eaten contaminated meat. It was interesting because the vultures had always been able to withstand the illness, but they thought it was because their immune system had been weakened due to antibiotics habitually given to animals that became their source of food.

I was aware that reptiles can carry salmonella do I always wash my hands after touching him as do dc. Very sorry to hear about your grandson xx

hi no he wasnt bitten they dont know how he got it but apparently it can be airbourne,reptiles carry salmonella on their skin.most people wouldnt know they had contracted it ,they would think they had a stomach bug,i think people should be told when they buy reptiles
