Back pain & sciatica after pregnancy - how common is it?

Quite a while after pg for me actually - dd is 2.0!

Is it fairly common to have back problems after pg? Does it ever go away? It's not always that painful but it's always there and is niggly and annoying.

How was your labour CF? I had really bad problems with my back (still do a bit) after Dd (18 months) and have been told it is due to a rather traumatic labour! I've started to visit a chiropractor over the last few months and I can really feel a difference. I would thoroughly recommend a visit - even if it is only a niggle, it's a niggle too many!!

My dd is 2 1/2 and I also have back pain, well hip pain to be exact, I blame the fact that I was pregnant and carrying dd1 around a lot, its the hip that I carry them on. I am planing to go and see somebody but dont feel its worth it until I have stopped carrying them so much as any good they do will immediately be undone.

I had a fairly straightforward labour but whilst pg I had terrible back and hip pain accompanied by sciatica. Didn't think much of it as I know it's common, and it cleared up to a degree after dd was born, but over the last couple of months it has got worse again. I have put a lot of weight on though so it'll be down to that.

Finances won't stretch to a chiropractor atm but I may see my gp to ask for some recommendations for excercises - Jenkel I wonder if it would be worth you doing the same, it might stop your pain being so bad when you carry your dd?

yes I had bad back problems. Was referred by GP to a physio. They gave me some exercises to do and it was sorted within a few weeks - afterwards I wished I hadn't waited so long to go to the docs.

When dd was 6 months I suffered a back strain. I saw a physio for 4 times which helped ease the pain (It was very painful to bend my back to put the baby in her cot, for instance). Since then I've been suffering from lower back pains, if I sit down for more than half an hour my sacrum hurts a lot. I think it's linked to pregnancy and giving birth. I think that taking up some gentle exercise should do good. I'm hoping to start a yoga class in september.

I had dreadful sciatica, the doc was dismissive and said all new mothers get it. In fact an mri scan revealed a slipped disc. I had a lot of physio, and also steroid injections in my spine. It is fine now, took about 18 mths to settle though.
