Sebbhoric dermatitis on face. Anyone successfully treated this?

Saw gp who prescribed dermol and Nizarole shampoo but its still there.
Flares up if I tired or stressed calms down if I use canesten HC but never completely goes away.
It's driving me mad and is so disfiguring.
Loads in the net about it but wondered if anyone has found a good treatment on here.

I have this on my scalp, behind ears and during the winter months on my face.

My GP prescribed fucidin cream. I use polytar for my scalp.

I read online (on an american site) that anti septic shampoos are good for this. Its also called pityriasis steatoides. I don't know of any UK brands of anti septic shampoo though.

Thank you.
I've just had a terrible flare up. I'm gli g to ask for a referral to dermatology.

My partner has this and we keep it in check on the scalp by using t-gel and head and shoulders. I also made him a rinse of apple cider vinegar/tea tree oil/water and that worked beautifully.

Raw honey is good on the face during a flare. He uses coconut oil every day in his face as a moisturiser. That generally stops the flakiness and he doesn't react to it. When he has occasional bad flares he uses a tiny bit if steroid cream but I've read fantastic things about oil of oregano mixed with jojoba and I plan on making him a option so he can hopefully stop these occasional bad flares.

In terms of your diet sugar feeds yeast. If it is really getting you down and you think you can cope with a radical diet shift I would recommend adopting a Paleo diet. If you can avoid refined carbs and sugar and feed your body natural anti fungals I think you could keep the wolf from the door naturally.

Is it definitely sebhorric dermatitis? It could be peri oral dermatitis which looks similar but responds to topical or oral antibiotics( topical will work more slowly but won't really affect your tummy as much). I get this every winter for some reason! Avoid any cream or cosmetics, even face wash in the area, but go back to the doc and see if it could be something else. Good luck!

I must admit my gp only saw it once and diagnosed it.
I've just had surgery and it flared up before and during (stress maybe?) so I wonder if it is sine thing else.
Dermol doesn't help, steroid/anti fungal work ok but never take it off completely.
In fed up of not being able to use my nice creams and stuff, I have to cover it to go out when it's bad or I would be stared at.

I have found my GP to be dismal tbh. I was never given a formal diagnosis, but I have been prescribed everything under the sun, inc a steroid in liquid form. All from the age of 6/7.

I thought it was psoriasis for years until I started really looking into it online. This year it has flared ridiculously and I am back to scraping my scalp with warm oil and a nit comb. :(

I will be trying the things suggested ^ up there too!

Have you tried selsun? Dh responds to this but not nizoral and t gel etc. topical steroids work too but selsun works well.

Ledkr · 06/01/2014 08:26

My gp is useless too.
I'm finding more and more that there is literally nowhere to get help if you have a non urgent condition.
Our dr insists on "triage system" which you are hardly going to call for a bloody rash!

I have looked up the perioral dermatitis, but that doesn't seem to be what I have. My face isn't too bad today (I cut out bread and fizzy juice last wed, could be a link there) but its usually more flaky white skin with a little red, rather than red raw looking.

My ears actually weep, the skin secretes liquid. Sometimes it smells, sometimes not, and even after a shower it crusts straight over. Moisture in the air makes it worse.

It went away during my first pregnancy and I had a lovely 4 years with very very mild scales now and again. Then my second pregnancy hit and a couple of hideously stressful years and its back to full strength.

sksk · 06/01/2014 09:24

You have to make it sound so much worse to get the doctor to see you. Take photos of yourself and take them to show the doctor- I had to do the same when I first got it and it was made worse by a steroid cream. Then they gave me a steroid ointment, then some gel. By that stage it was awful. I demanded a referral to a dermatologist as I told the GP this was my fourth visit about it! He obliged but prescribed me antibiotics- he said it looked like acne which it did at that stage. Wrong diagnosis but correct treatment. Go to the GP and if they won't prescribe oral antibiotics, see if they will give you topical clindamycin. But if it is really bad at this time, oral May be better and stave off makeup, crams, face washes etc. good luck! I know all about how awful it feels.

girlylala0807 · 06/01/2014 09:41

I have this on my face as well. It is awful. Sometimes I look like I have been burnt under eyes. Worse when it starts in work as I do a customer facing role. You have my sympathy.

I use T gel shampoo to wash my face. It sometimes works. I also use canesten HC. That usually works but not always. I sometimes have to use an ice pack on my face to try and cool it down. Natural yoghurt can cool it and seems to get rid of the redness for a little while. Someone else told me to try this from lush www.lush.co.uk/product/113/Dark-Angels-Cleanser and it sometimes helps to clear it.

I will watch all the advices with interest as well as this condition is horrible and really kills my confidence.

RockinD · 06/01/2014 11:36

Have any of you considered cutting out anything that has sodium lauryl sulphate in it?

I have all sorts of skin problems, including psoriasis and I have found that cutting out SLS has made a world of difference.

sebsmummy1 · 06/01/2014 13:02

I kept getting peri oral dermatitis and didn't know what the hell it was.

I don't get it now and I think it could have had something to do with the toothpaste I was using. I think Colgate was getting a bad wrap for causing it.
