Pin prick bruising on hands & arms

Ujjayi · 04/01/2014 15:23

I need some advice please. I noticed pin prick bruising/rash over my hands & arms 2 hours ago. It hasn't spread anywhere else. I am feeling otherwise well - no aches, pains or temp.

The dots are red but not raised or itchy. They don't disappear with the glass test. Would pin prick bruising behave this way? Or do I need to be worried about meningococcal rash?

My first thought was I might have overdone my yoga class - taking too much pressure on my arms/hands.

Can anyone shed any light? Wondering if I need to see a doctor now or if it can wait until Monday.

The pin prick rash associated with meningitis, develops because of septicimia, if this was the case you would be feeling extremely poorly indeed.

However I do remember years ago a poster on here posting a similar thing, had the rash you describe but felt fine, if I remember correctly she ended up in hospital and it was a sign of a blood clotting disorder, so I really think at the very least you should seek medical advice through nhs direct or 111.

Hopefully it will turn out to be nothing :)

I think that was me! With a different name.

Worth going to get checked at GP. I had a blood test that day and was referred to hospital.

Do you have any bruising anywhere else?

Might of course be nothing or something totally different!

shinynewname · 04/01/2014 17:14

Although I didn't end up in hospital, just as an outpatient for a few months of appointments. So probably not me. :)

GobblersKnob · 04/01/2014 17:16

shineynewname, did you once have a name beginning with k?

GobblersKnob · 04/01/2014 17:17

And my memory may have been shaky on the details, I remember a hospital being involved ;)

I get this on my face and neck after vomiting. Apparently it is to do with extreme and sudden exertion (as you get with violent retching). It faded to mauve then brown then went just as a bruise would.

Don't know if yours could be the same though so worth checking it out.

shinynewname · 04/01/2014 17:33

No but the K poster was on my thread too!

Thanks for replies.

It's now 6 hours since it appeared & is no worse. I am still feeling well except for normal aches I might feel after exercise...I'm 42 Grin

It's been a long time since I practised this kind of fast-paced yoga so I think it may well be due to exertion. However, the blood clotting issue has me concerned so I will see GP on monday.

Shinynewname: did your bruising appear after exercise?

I don't have any other bruising except for arms & hands.

Mine appeared a few weeks after my baby was born actually. I had a lot of what looked like ordinary bruises too though, as well as the petechiae pin prick ones.

I know what the other poster said about exertion though, I also spewed so hard in my second pregnancy that I had some pin prick bruising on my face!

DH has reminded me that I also had pin prick bruising all over my face after DS1 was born - pushing too hard!

I am feeling less concerned but I started on new meds 2 months ago & have recently increased the dose. Be wise to have a blood test just in case.

Thanks for sharing Smile. I'll update after seeing GP.

This could be Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura - ITP - for short. It's a blood clotting disorder caused by a virus, often without anyone knowing they were I'll or feeling like they have a bit of a cold. My son had this and needed hospital treatment. Should get it checked out OP, just in case :)

Ujjayi · 06/01/2014 13:34

It has completely disappeared today so wondering if I still need to go to GP?

If it's gone your GP's interest in it will also have disappeared. Many GPs would not even do a blood test and consider this a wasted appointment.

If you did lots of yoga using your hands there is an obvious explanation.

Ujjayi · 07/01/2014 22:37

That's what I thought Kundry re GP interest. However I have been practising yoga for 10 years & never experienced this reaction.

I think you should seek your GP. I had this and it turned out to be
immune thrombocytopenia. I had very few platelets left in my blood.

I ended up having my spleen removed as they couldn't get it under control.

Best to get it checked out

Kundry · 07/01/2014 23:37

If it comes back again then you can tell your GP it's happened twice which is much more interesting. They probably would do a blood test then which is likely to be normal and then you can put it down to 'just being one of those things'.

Once and gone away, I wouldn't worry.

Ujjayi · 08/01/2014 12:09

Saw GP today & before I could even suggest it she booked me in for blood test for platelet count. So should know for sure by Monday-ish.

Thanks again!
