Varicose Veins... am I the only one?

lumpylegs · 24/07/2006 17:42

Both my parents have varicose veins, which I suppose means that I'm fated to have them too. I got one on my calf in my early 20's, but it hasn't advanced much.
Amazingly, I didn't get any new ones during my pregnancy, but now that DD is 15months and I've lost all the weight, they are really coming on. WHY?

Looking at my friends' legs, I think I'm the only one too. Now I suspect that I might be pg again, and I'm sure that this time round they will be no stopping them...

Me too! Great big fat juicy ones right behind my knee and lovely blue ones on my other leg. Plus a lovely round spider thread cluster which looks like my leg is permanently bruised. Have been thinking about having them lasered ... friend of mine is having hers done in a couple of months so I'll wait and see what hers look like first! Have been wearing skirts covering my knees, but in this heat I've thought "sod it" and put my shorts on. (Copious amounts of fake tan on me pins first, of course - don't want to blind them by their whiteness!)

Genetic.

I have a couple....(mum had terrible veins)

southeastastra · 24/07/2006 18:50

it does seem to be genetic, my sis has them really bad, my mum also did blinking things. oh and she had some of those tight pant things that hold everything in, these made her veins worse

lumpylegs · 24/07/2006 21:41

Well, it doesn't make my legs look better, but at least I'm not the only one!

Get some support stockings from the pharmacy. Get measured for proper ones, not ones that go on shoe sizes. I stand up 10 hours a day (or will when I finish maternity leave) and have worn them since I started the job 7 years ago. Summer or winter I wear class 2 surgical below knee stockings (they look like black opaque tights under trousers) and my veins haven't go any worse. I didn't even get swollen ankles when pregnant.

handlemecarefully · 24/07/2006 23:07

shudder ! support stockings in this hot sticky weather...

lumpylegs · 25/07/2006 08:31

yay! got my BFP today, so definitely off to get some support tights. I figure that I can probably wait until the weather turns a bit colder before I wear them - I won't be carrying any more weight for a while and I don't think they would look so good with shorts

Thanks RR! Would be nice to think that I could take it easy, instead I will be lifting heavy weights (DD is 15mths), and walking around all day pushing a pushchair in this heat.
I'll just have to take JennT's advice about the stockings. Bleaurgh!
