I have Glaucoma - anyone else?

Was told on Monday. I'm 34 so quite young, but had a retinal tomography test and it shows quite extensive nerve damage. Also had a visual fields test which shows loss of vision.

I've been started on Xalatan drops which have made the whites of my eyes go red and give me a gritty feeling. The ophthalmologist said that it may make my lashes longer, thicker and darker which is fine, but he didn't tell me that it would change my eye colour Shock

Just wondering if anyone has any experience they can share with me.

My friend has normal tension glaucoma, and was diagnosed at much the same age as you.
I seem to remember the drops did irritate at first, but def settled in time.

Thanks CMOT Smile

My wee mum has had it since she was mid 30s - she is on the same drops as you and they caused irritation at first. On the plus side she has beautiful long curled lashes.

My Mum has glaucoma (although she's 84) and again found that the irritation eased after a while. We were told that this was normal so hopefully it'll be the same for you. Had never heard of the eyelash thing! Will check out Mum's eyelashes next time I'm putting the drops in Grin

(BTW, anyone who has a close family member with glaucoma is entitled to free annual eye tests after the age of 40, so you can be monitored for early signs. I know that, as with the OP, it can develop earlier, but it might be useful for someone.)

Arthur and Empire, have your mums eyes changed colour at all?

I have suspect glaucoma - have nerve damage in one eye but no vision loss. Started Xatalan in Aug but not only did it do nothing for eye pressure but it made me so illHmm took me a month before I realised it was the eye drops - started off like a cold until it was like the flu. Stopped for 2 weeks and it was instant relief. Started again and came back within days.
Can't use the beta blockers so am stuck on Azopt which is also doing nothing for the pressure Hmm
Am hassling for cold laser treatment but not having any luck getting it! Really hope you have more luck than me with treatment! Sadly I will be saving up to go private if this carries on and it doesn't get under control. On the plus side my mum has had it for 20+ years and hardly any vision loss Smile

It's hard to tell about the colour change. She has a growing yellowness around her irises, but that is normal at her age. I haven't noticed any change from her normal green/brown apart from that.

EmpireBiscuit · 02/01/2014 21:36

I don't think so. They are maybe a bit brighter blue when I think on it but that I think that could also be down to the big daisy the cow black eyelashes!

Another with a parent who has glaucoma, and yes, one of the first things she. Offices was a change in her eye colour - bright a light sherry brown to a dark brown. I'm monitored frequently as have had borderline pressures, expect to develop it at some point.

She. Offices??
No idea were that came from- 'she noticed' !

My 34 yo brother has just been diagnosed but he's been told he needs to go directly to laser surgery rather than drops, probably because of the other meds he's on (he has ulcerative colitis and related arthritis).

My dad is on drops for it, I haven't noticed any changes in eye colour for him but he does have to trim his eyelashes now as they grew so long they rubbed on his glasses and annoyed him.
