Hiya all :)
So I have been on levo about 4 months now 25mg .
My last blood test ( first after taking it 6weeks) showed levels normal so doc said continue on this for 6months .
I feel so much better in myself and so I am really pleased but my periods have become very very light. Been off the pill for a year( trying to conceive) and my periods were never heavy but lasted 3 -4 days , bit of cramping etc...
Last two periods have been like a dribble tbh ( sorry tmi! )
Is this normal ??
How on earth can I blooming conceive ?!

Hi idk about you but just been prescribed this looked online and apparently it does not help. Is this true or not?

lisadolly75 · 31/12/2013 22:03

Well its not gonna help you conceive as such but your thyroid is very important when do get pg.
Just wondered if ur periods were meant to get lighter?
Forgot to say I am 38 !

My periods are as heavy as ever having been on thyroxine for nearly 5 years.

Have you had any other pregnancies. How long have you been ttc? Sme people always have very light periods and manage to successfully conceive.

If you are concerned, then perhaps it would be worth asking your endocrinologist?

Referred to who?

HombreLobo · 01/01/2014 12:01

Hypothyroidism can make periods heavier, so being treated can result in lighter periods. I don't think there is any correlation between heaviness of flow and liklihood of getting pregnant as long as you are ovulating and having periods

merryxmasyafilthyanimal · 01/01/2014 12:06

I've found my periods have got lighter on levo but I'm on 150mg, trying to go up to 175mg

Bear in mind what your doctor tells you is normal is normal within a huge range. So what's normal for one person is wrong for another - despite bring 'normal'

When you get pregnant you will need to up your levo - some say by 25mg a day as soon as you find out. Ask your doctor - if they don't know what you are talking about please ask to be referred to a consultant.

I had the opposite, my periods got much lighter before my diagnosis and then got better after I started thyroxine.

So it could be, strange things happen with hormones.

25mcg is such a small dose that it is unlikely to make any real difference to anything. There is published research that says that if you're under 60 and have no signs or symptoms of ischemic heart disease, you can start on 100mcg.

However, to conceive and maintain a pregnancy, you will need to have a TSH under 2. There are NICE guidelines to this effect, available on line. Your GP should be following these.

I would always advise anyone with thyroid issues to ensure that they always get their test results in full, with the reference range.

If you are hypothyroid and TTC you may need a referral to an endocrinologist who specialises in this and yes, once you are pregnant, you will need to be very carefully monitored and will need more levo.

Oh thankyou ladies! I will book an appointment and get my results from last blood test and see if it about 2 . My doctor is aware that I am ttc but i will ask to see an endocrinologist.
