DH became ill over a week ago having caught whatever it is from someone who went in to work ill.

I have asthma so have had my flu jab.

I became ill after 3 days. DD is now coughing and has a cold. DS2 is coughing. DH and I are still ill.

DD has had calpol.
DH and I are taking Lemsip.

It has gone to my chest and I am using my inhaler.

I could cry. DH never gets a week off and has spent all of it ill. He is due back to work on Thursday. The kids are due back to school on Tuesday.

Kids are eating, keep reminding them to drink too.

What can we do and how long can we expect to take to get well? It has been so long already.

I would consider getting seen if you feel it has gone to your chest and you need your inhaler.

DH will probably bounce back soon, as will the kids.

Sympathies.

There seems to be a really evil cough bug around just now that lasts for ages. We had it and know lots who have.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 31/12/2013 11:34

What could the doctor do though? I don't feel able to drive tbh and don't want to take an appointment slot to be told to keep on taking Lemsip and inhaler. I did make it to the pharmacist the other day and she said it will just have to take it's time. It hurts to cough and I feel so cold even with three layers, a scarf and a blanket on.

just wondering if you have a chest infection and need antibiotics. Sounds awful.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 31/12/2013 11:37

Could you speak to the duty doctor on phone?

mousmous · 31/12/2013 11:41

sounds awful.
hope you are better soon.
offer warm soups (instant soups are fine if you don't feel like cooking) or oxo cubes or similar for the fluid intake. take a multi vitamin.
be careful not to overdose on the lemsip.
agree with previous poster that you shoud get seen, probably nothing but better careful as pneumonia is vile.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 31/12/2013 11:42

If only. I could ring and ask to speak to a nurse but the receptionist would want to know why and then decide herself if I need a nurse. I have a chill now. Just so upset, all Christmas dh and I have been ill, the kids have been out for 2 hours only to PIL and I am rubbish at being ill as it is just such a waste of time. I had my flu jab as well.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 31/12/2013 11:43

I don't even know if just a bad cough which has annoyed my asthma as real flu means you can't get out of bed but you have to when you have children and animals to look after.

i would think you would be allowed to speak to someone if you have what could be a chest infection affecting your asthma.

DropDeadThread · 31/12/2013 11:47

Flu jab won't stop you getting a bad cold or cough I'm afraid.

I have asthma and it's a horrible wheezy feeling. Make sure you take your blue one a few minutes before taking your preventer so you manage to breathe it all in. It's harder to take inhalers properly when you're already wheezy.

Lots of fluids, warm baths (I find the steam helps me to cough up any gunk) and to be honest I think unless you have a raging fever the best thing to do is wrap up and go out for a walk for half an hour. Maybe be the last thing you feel like doing but if you are cold it's probably from being still. Use a scarf to cover your mouth and nose to save your asthma being aggravated and you will feel more human when you get back in.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 31/12/2013 11:50

I have no problem with going out for a walk. I just know it will wipe me out for the rest of the day. I think we will go after lunch. We need to get out. Each day feels rubbish atm.

Dh and I have been ill this whole Christmas holiday too. Chills, horrid cough, chesty feeling, wheezy and full of gunk.
Dh has asthma and he is feeling particularly chesty and wheezy. His cough is horrendous, especially at night.
Neither of us have slept a full night for over a week due to coughing.

However, we have a dog. And we are forcing ourselves to walk him every day. And we do feel better for it. Put a scarf over your mouth and nose to avoid breathing in cold air (as this hurts!) and go for a gentle stroll. Come home to a steaming cup of tea and a slice of Christmas cake. Then snuggle up on the sofa for family dvd time. It really works Smile

Luckily our dc are slightly bigger (14 and 11) and have been able to entertain themselves whilst dh and I did not feel up to much (eldest did his own thing, youngest just needed dropping at stables or friend's houses)

Keep taking the lemsip. Dh is finding sudofed helpful. I know opinions on sudofed are varied but for him it meant up to 5 hours of uninterrupted sleep last night, so that is a bonus!

Hope you all feel better soon.

bumbumsmummy · 31/12/2013 11:56

Maybe open a window or two for a little while and get some fresh air

It's miserable all being ill

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 31/12/2013 11:58

BLNN - sorry you have been ill too. It being Christmas makes it worse somehow doesn't it?

You need a doctor's appointment to check out your chest, especially as you are asthmatic and need an inhaler. For goodness sake get yourself seen before it all shuts up until Thursday. You may need antibiotics and you may need some steroid tablets to keep your asthma at bay whilst you recover. You ought to be a priority and you really should have rung first thing - hope they can fit you in.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 31/12/2013 13:43

Warm soup and a walk have been had. It was so nice to be out even though it started raining while we were out. It is the first time I have been out in days and the furthest I have walked in over a week.

I will see how I am tomorrow. I can't see that the doctor can do anything to be honest as antibiotics won't help a cough and my asthma isn't too bad at the moment. Fresh air has never felt so good!

DropDeadThread · 31/12/2013 14:11

Good for you. It cures most things that stuff!

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 31/12/2013 15:26

I am taking it easy. My chest feels a bit like it is being squashed but as long as I don't do much I think I will be okay. DH isn't as bad as me atm so he will so the kids tea.

Huge sympathies. I came down with something the day I finished work for the holidays and am only better now, when I'm back in work on Thurs. Bah.

zipzap · 31/12/2013 15:51

I've always found that proper hot lemon and honey is soothing and helps mt cough more than something like lemsip - and tastes better! I just take paracetamol &/or neurofen separately to get maximum benefit from each component.

If I have a bad cough (happens frequently!) I've found that if you're having a bad coughing fit, cough sweets are dangerous in case you accidentally choke on them but a bit of honey on a spoon works wonders to soothe and stop it. Ds1 loathes honey but even he now asks for it when he has a cough.

Having oil as oil around to inhale - on your pillow if you're in bed or on a hanky or in the room you are in can help to keep your nose unblocked which can also help to reduce the amount you cough. If you are really blocked up, those funny sticker things for the top of your nose can help but are expensive. However you can get temporary relief by simulating their action - just gently stretching the skin right by the side of the bridge of your nose. Sounds odd and takes a minute or two to get it exactly right but worth figuring as you'll be able to do it easily from then on.

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 31/12/2013 16:09

I need to get some lemons and honey as I have neither in. I buy honey for illness and then the kids ear it all on their toast and don't tell me.

We've all had chest infections awful coughing fits :( we had a humidifier which helped if you've not got one steam bathroom up as much as poss and breath that in or wet towels on the radiators. Not sure if that will be ok if you have asthma though- get well soon all

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 31/12/2013 16:20

Actually we did use a humidified last night when we went to bed but it didn't help. I think I just have to sit it out. The kids seem okay, thankfully.
