Has my dentist failed me?

Yesterday I saw an oral surgeon who I'd been referred to as the dentist was " unsure " about what was causing a swelling along my gum / jawline.
I've recently ( in the last 8 months ) had all 3 back teeth on that side worked on, 2 large fillings and a root canal.
3 weeks ago ( a few weeks after the root canal ) a massive swelling came up, dentist said abscess an prescribed me antibiotics.
Fast forward a week and no improvement so another dose of antibiotics as referral to an oral surgeon for possible cyst / malignancy.
Spent the last week terrified only to have my appt at the hospital yesterday to be told in now way is it anything other than an abscess and it's common for them not to be treated by antibiotics if the problem is deep rooted.
He also showed me an x ray of one of the large fillings which is near enough directly on the nerve.
He said this is usually what causes this type of infection, that they've damaged the nerve ( obviously this maybe could not be helped as very large filling ) and a dentist should have known that this was causing this.
He was very annoyed they'd used the " 2 week rule " for my appoitment and advised me to go to another dentist who does know what they're doing.
A little ( a lot ) confused,
Any dentists or anyone with any knowledge about stuff like this here?
Have a follow up with my dentist this afternoon

I had the work done at kings.
They told me they only offer extraction on back teeth that have very large holes but I pushed for it to be root canaled as its a tooth you can see when I smile
Not sure if this is because it's a hospital / sedation work but that's what they said and my own dentist said the same when I went in yesterday for my antibiotics.
The root canaled tooth was previously root canaled 10 years ago, am I right in thinking if it is that one that's causing it I need to have it taken out and am implant rather than doing the root canal again?

Also forgot to mention, they left 5 months between the temporary filling and permanent due to a lack of appointments on the root canaled tooth.
Not sure if this made it more likely to fail?

OP

After all this work book an appointment with a dental hygienist and learn how to brush and floss correctly, manage your diet/sugar intake and look after your teeth.

I have often been astonished at friends who have regular waxing/highlights/tints/manicures/pedicures/massages etc and spend 30 seconds brushing their teeth.

Also Mrs Morton is right on every count.

Mrs morton has said EVERYTHING I wish I'd said. I'm a dentist, and a bit pissed right now. But she's soooo right.

Redruby
I will do that and will have a clean also when I'm having this work done under sedation
I wish I didnt have the phobia but the only good that has come of all this work being done is that I'm determined not to let this happen again
