I am trying to be careful about my weight, also I thought some foods might be better as a protector for my stomach. I've been having a glass of milk and a biscuit! Not very healthy I know.

Spoonful of natural yoghurt? Hope you have Omeprazole, though. That's what it is for. ( though obviously you are still supposed to take with food).

No I don't have the omeprazol. I know they sometimes give another stomach protective medicine with naproxen but the dr did not give me any. Could this be a problem? I did wonder about it?

Well I take naproxen and definitely don't need a stomach ulcer, so yes, I would say you should to be safe. Also, insist on the marginally more expensive enteric coated naproxen.

Bloody doctors! ( sorry to any on here, I'm sure you're great and don't need your patients pointing out the bleeding obvious!)

Oh dear I had heard this but thought dr might have some reason, he just said do you have any problem with anti inflammatories? I will try to find out about this. Could i buy something OTC?

You could ask the pharmacist re OTC but I'd be onto the surgery to get a prescription. I've taken naproxen for nearly two years now. Getting Omeprazole was a tip I got from a bad back buddy!

StillNoFuckingEyeDeer · 21/12/2013 13:58

You can buy lansoprazole over the counter or you could buy ranitidine, but you shouldn't have to. You're not asking it to reduce acid from overindulgence, it's from prescribed medication. Ask for a prescription.

As for the snack - a glass of milk is fine. Or a low fat yogurt?

Thanks I will call dr about this x

I don't want to add another voice of dissent, but your not asthmatic are you?

I am (mildly), but usually fine with ibuprofen etc.. so i didn't think anything of it when the doctor prescribed it.

A week later I was on steroids, coughing up blood and still had back pain to go with my severe breathing difficulties. I will never forget it and cannot believe the doctor prescribed it in the first place tbh.

It's made me extremely wary of what I will actually take.

revivingshower · 21/12/2013 14:35

No not asthmatic thankfully, I will keep a close eye on how I feel. My friend who told me about using the stomach protective medicine actually had to stop taking it, as even with the other med it was giving her a bad abdominal pain. So I have been a bit worried about it.

And really do insist on the enteric coated naproxen if you don't already have it. I really can't understand why it isn't standard but it isn't. I had quite an argument with a locus GP in order to get it.

I later asked the pharmacist exactly what the price difference was. It was about 25p more expensive. Pretty sure investigating and treating a gastric ulcer costs more than 25p.Confused
