toothache

Just wondered if there are any dentists or dental professionals on here that can help. I have had tootchache all weekend and ibuprofen does work and gets rid of it and it is painful but not horrendous. The tooth that hurts is tender to pressure and occasionally throbs. Anyway have been to the dentist for an emergency apt this morning with another dentist in the practice as mine is now away till after Christmas. The earliest apt they can offer me with my dentist is 8th January as she isn't back till the 6th. The other dentist can not do any treatment as she isn't my dentist. The tooth is fractured and will need either a restorative filling or a crown but this isn't her decision. I asked her if she could do something temporary to get rid of the pain and she said not really a temporary job wont work on this tooth if pain gets unbearable go back and she will see what she can do. I know it shouldn't be about the money but paid £18 to be seen today for nothing to be done and if go back again because of the pain will be another £18. She said to just keep taking ibuprofen and using a mouthwash and yes I probably can cope but it isn't very nice. So my question is are they obliged under the NHS to do something or as it is Christmas and my dentist is off do I just have to wait?? Thanks

Sorry can't help much but I think that is very annoying. I cant see why she couldnt do it? But i dont know the rules.
The only thing I would do is rub it with ambesol mouth ulcer liquid it helps with the pain and is also antiseptic so helps prevent infection Also hold an icecube in the opposite hand from the side the pain is on if it flares up and you are waiting for painkillers to take effect. This helps distract the brain/pain signals.

It sounds a bit odd to be honest. The pain you describe sounds like a tooth that may need more attention than just a filling. Usually if a tooth is sore to touch and throbs, it might mean the nerve of the tooth is inflamed.

You do NOT need antibiotics so don't let anyone prescribe you them for a start. Just because she's not your dentist doesn't mean she can't do anything, that's a strange thing to say.
They aren't really obliged to see you unless you're in an active course of treatment which it doesn't sound like you are because of the fee you're paying, I'm a bit rusty on these rules though.

I would call NHS 111 and ask to see someone at an emergency dental service. The pct I work for does ooh almost every day of the week except Saturdays.

Clove oil is really good for toothache but tastes vile.
You have my sympathy. I fear toothache more than labour pains.
