severe nappy rash in 22 month old

22month old ds had never had such severe nappy rash before. It has been going on for a couple of weeks and is so sore just in the cracks of his groin. I have tried sudacream which usually does the trick and he has his nappy off whenever possible, and sleeps a lot with no nappy at all at the moment. Also trying cloth nappies but nothing seems to help. What can I use? Any tips gratefully appreciated.

Sorry to hear your little on is suffering. I would have suggested what you are doing already i'm afraid. Sudocreme and leaving nappy off. Do you have a drop in clinic for your Health visitor? Might be worth showing them. Good luck

little one, oops

Ruty...I would say a visit to the G.P is needed if the rash is so bad, they can give you some stronger cream to use, sudocrem is only like a barrier cream and will not heal it.

Hope it gets better soon. X

get some metanium ointment from boots it always clears my DSs nappy rash up in a couple of days

Do check out whether it's thrush. It looks very like horrendous nappy rash, but won't clear up with the usual creams. canesten cream works a treat. A good indicator of thrush is if it is srarting to sprad past the nappy area onto the thighs, not much, just a little.

Hi, You are doing great by keeping the nappy off and also try changing the nappies every hour to keep ds bottom dry. I've typed an essay below and hope you find something to try that helps:
--Do you use baby wipes? Try swopping to cotton wool and cooled boiled water then dry off with paper towel, the wipes leave moisture on the bottom for bacteria to breed.
--I gave up on Sudocream and a friend suggested Drapolene its in a tub or tube from behind the counter at the pharmacy, you have to ask for it. It works really well, better than all the other creams. I put some in the cracks/creases then put vaseline around the whole area to give it a better chance of keeping the area dry.
--Also, it might be better to get a tube, its more effective in preventing contamination ie if you have a tub and you put your hand in twice you might be putting the germs in the tub for next time.
--Also (I'm on a role!) try cutting down any acidic foods and drinks like grapes, tomatoes and cordial or fruit juice and just give water as the acidic stuff aggravates the rash.

thanks everbody for the tips. I'll try some of those ideas thankyou. I hope it's not thrush but if it persists i will get it checked. Don't feel like hanging around hot surgery at the mo but may have to later on. got a few things now to try first - thanks all.

just had another look and i am a bit worried it might be thrush now, it has extended onto his inner thighs and is a bit spotty. will try gp, reluctantly.

Either that or just but some Canesten from the chemist. It works.

Hi, hows the rash?

JellyNump · 25/07/2006 23:43

Paint raw egg white onto the rash when you change the baby, leave it to dry and then put the new nappy on, it creates a better barrier. It is safe, I've checked it with a doctor. I've used it my Mum and my Gran used it.
