Underactive adrenals

Hi, wondered if anyone has any experience or knows anything about underactive adrenals? I seem to be experiencing many of the symptoms (low blood sugar, dizziness when standing, always cold ). Is it worth going to GP or will I not be taken seriously. Is there a specific test that confirm underactive adrenals ?Would be really grateful for any feedback.

Are you stressed out? I'm not a dr, I just wondered if you were stressed and this might indicate you're burning all your energy thus it's affecting your body?

HoHolepew · 11/12/2013 21:27

I've been told I've had it in the past but not by a GP.
You can buy supplements to help your adrenal system, some aromatherapy oils are supposed to be beneficial.
Cutting way down on carbs and sugar will really help.

Honestly? Go to the docs if you're not feeling well, but I reckon the whole adrenal fatigue thing is a big old sham. And the over the counter tests or those done by nutritionists are really a waste of money.

Maybe try to live well for a few weeks - balanced diet, regular meals, healthy snacks if you need them, exercise, plenty of sleep etc and see if you feel better. If not - go to docs with an open mind?

Go to the doctors and explain your symptoms, to me, they don't sound like adrenal insufficiency (addinson's syndrome) - my mother has this and it doesn't ring true. If it were me i would be asking them to run a full blood profile and start from there. They can test your coritico steroid levels, but i shouldnt think it would be first test as it tends to involve bloods being taken at different times of the day iirc. What made you thnk of this?

Many thanks for the advice. I will give the GP a go - got nothing to lose. LEM, one of the main reasons I thought I may have it is because I wake up most nights ( around 2ish) feeling sick. I have to eat something to take the feeling away (suggesting low blood sugar). The other main reason is that when I go from sitting to standing everything goes white and blurred for a few seconds and I find myself having to hold onto something to stop me falling. The waking in the night is the worst thing as I then struggle getting back to sleep. Then affects my mood the next day.
My diet is pretty good, no wheat, sugar, diary, processed food, so not sure what else I can do to improve that. I read that licorice is good so have ordered some and will give that a go too.

Do you think you might be suffering from anxiety - all those things can be caused by stress. The standing up could be a drop in blood pressure and that is quite common, so a BP check would see what is going on there. Definately a trip to the GP in order. Is there a reason why you are on a restrictive diet?

Marjie3 · 12/12/2013 16:42

I know the diet sound OTT, but milk makes me snotty, wheat makes me look pregnant and sugar turns me into a b**ch.
AS you can imagine not a nice combo!!!
I think you're right, it is anxiety so I'm going to try and tackle that before i go wasting GPs time. Thanks for your reply.

Adrenal fatigue appears to be the new 'in thing' or so says the frustrated endocrinologist I saw.

Going to the GP for anxiety is not a waste of time btw. Speak to them, maybe get some blood tests to rule out anything obvious.

HazeltheMcWitch · 12/12/2013 22:37

Are you eating enough, truly? The diet sounds very restrictive, and my suspicion is that you wake up in the night as you're hungry, and/or anxious.
Not eating enough would also explain the fatigue, the dizzy spells, the coldness.

Agree with candy that seeking help for anxiety (or eating issues) is not a waste of time - ie every bit as valid as seeking help for an adrenal issue.
