Green gunk in 10month old's eye but no redness

Can someone give a bit of advice please? I got ds up from his afternoon nap and his right eye had a lot of green gunk along the lower lash line and in the corner, but no redness. i've cleaned it with a damp tissue but by bedtime it was building up again. he goes to bed early (6) or else i would have taken him in his pram to the chemist for advice. Is this conjunctivitis? can i get something over the counter or would we have to see the GP? TIA

my ds had this once, it frightened the life out of me because it was bright green! it cleared up on its own, if he still has it tomorrow you could try the pharmacy?

peanutbutter · 18/07/2006 18:50

yes southeastastra, bright green is what it is! your ds' cleared up on its own you say?

my dd1 had this when she was 7months .. i'd wipe away and it'd come back .. we were on hols at the time, but i had brought the steriliser, whole hog! Back in london, my gp said she probs had an infection, but it'd cleared up by itself.

peanutbutter · 18/07/2006 18:57

oh, well that's two of you whose lo's have cleared up on their own. thanks for your replies; i'll see what he's like tomorrow.

yes it cleared up after a couple of days and he was fine

SoupDragon · 18/07/2006 19:19

BabyDragon (5months) has this. It comes and goes.

DD used to get this a lot. I used to treat it with a camomile tea bath - make up camomile tea, leave to cool, then wipe a piece of cotton wool once from tear duct to outside edge. Repeat until gunk gone.

Would do this 3 -4 times a day. Usually took a day or so to clear.

HTH

BabyRed had this a couple of weeks ago, along with a cold. Took her to the doctor who told me it was an eye infection and gave me eye drops and antibiotics. (Ever tried putting eye drops in a 9 month old baby's eye? Doesn't work.)

Is this another example of our crap doctors round here? Am a bit annoyed that I've given her antibiotics if I could have cleared it up with camomile. Grr.

peanutbutter · 19/07/2006 08:43

PinkyRed I know how you must feel but don't sweat it, at least now we've had good advice for next time.

thanks everyone for your reassurance. Ds' eyes were perfect this morning all on their own

One of my dd's eyes is very prone to infection and has been from birth.
I was told after many Opthamology appt's that it was because she scratched her eye when she was born on the way out IYKWIM.
So now she gets infections quite easily.

Sometimes I get it treated especially if it goes on but a couple of things you could do is nip into your Gp's and ask if you could have some saline solution from the nurse (they normally give it for free) or ask at your chemist for some. Dab it on some cotton wool and wipe the eye once and throw away.

Another good rememdy is a very dilute solution of baby shampoo. My mum said she and other nurses use this on patients she works with to clean eyes.

I reckon it will be Conjuctivitus.

Two of my sisters were very prone to eye infections as kids and our doctor recommended washing with tea. Just make up black tea and leave in a saucer to cool then clean eyes with it. Seems to work a treat

YellowFeathers · 19/07/2006 09:04

Just writing that one down alligator for future reference

just a last offering - i trawled the archives earlier & found (?)SoupDragon's suggested treatment in event of conjunctivitis - 1tsp bicarb dissolved in 1pint cooled boiled water and wiped on the eye.
Our mums and grandmas would have just turned to these cupboard rememdies without hesitation. How different things are now.
