So I go diagnosed with under active thyroid 2 weeks ago with tsh 9 and have been taking thyroxin since. Before I was diagnosed my main concern was hair falling out, heaving periods and tiredness which to be honest wasn't probably any worse than any other working mother of 2 dc. I run 3 x week and do yoga, and eat healthily generally. Some starting the pills I have gradually felt worse and worse, and then fog is just awful. I can only relate waking up in the morning to coming round from an anaesthetic, its just awful.

I very aware of not become symptomatic since getting a diagnosis!! And always blaming feeling not great on the thyroid!! However, this is really not bearable, I have zero energy all day, my running is so slow compared to two weeks ago, I'm practically walking. In fact yesterday I did such a slow jog, and working ten minutes of getting home I was actually asleep in bed. Normally exercise would wake me up...

I don't understand, as thyroxin is only a hormone and my levels weren't sky high, so what on earth is going on?
I have a lump on my thyroid which I'm being referred to hospital for scan for. I imagine nothing will happen before Xmas though, and I can't bear to feel like this over Xmas, any advice will be gratefully received!

I'm on thyroxine too and been trying to figure out why it doesn't seem to work... Came across this

chriskresser.com/three-reasons-why-your-thyroid-medication-isnt-working

Not sure what to do with it at the moment but want to give it some thought.

Sorry you are feeling so grim gd.

What dosage are you taking? They start you off with a very low dose and gradually increase it until you hopefully get to feeling relatively normal.

It may be that your levels are worse than they were when you were tested and the tablets aren't having much effect yet due to a low dosage.

I started out on 50mcg and it took about two and half years to get to a dose that made me feel vaguely normal (175mcg). I still get a lot of hair falling out and have a poor short-term memory, but I no longer fall asleep as soon as I sit down.

When are you due to go back to the GP to be reviewed? The thing with thyroxine is that sadly you often have to push to get your dosage increased.

Thanks ruby sparks, that looks really interesting and good for thought- I'm not sure what the answer is though? I'm going to a place called 'natural practises' tomorrow and they are going to test me for all vitamin/mineral deficiencys so may be interesting.....

I'm on 50 dose and due to have bloods again in 4 weeks, I like my gp as she seems quite pro active which is unusual, however she fully admits she doesn't know much about thyroids.... It just seems weird to have had such a deterioration in the space of 2 weeks, especially when I didn't feel that bad before hand..... It is my time of the month which never helps, have started taking meds to reduce heavy bleeding which is helping a little bit. ....

FOOD for thought, not good!!

50mcg is nothing in thyroxine terms. Seriously sounds like you need to have your dose increased.

gd1976 · 10/12/2013 21:36

How long do you think I need to be on 50mcg before moving up? What a the negatives of doing it too quickly? I thought that was ok as my levels aren't even at 10tsh?

They should move you up when they re-test you. They don't start you high because it can be harmful to have too much, but 50mcg is just a starting dose.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 10/12/2013 21:39

I need my levels to be around 1 to feel vaguely normal.

Last December I got very poorly (ended up with ambulance to house) routine bloods showed my thyroids levels at 69.3 it's taken a year (and 200mg of levothroxin ) to make me feel relatively Normal now but i still hVe bouts of unbelievable tiredness and also have IBS which flares up when dosage of thyroxin changes (had 2 weeks if severe diarrhea which ended up with codeine to stop it and then had the opposite effect a few months later) I think 2 weeks is a very short space of time so may not be medication x

gd1976 · 10/12/2013 21:50

That's all really interesting, especially about levels having to be as low as 1 to feel good. I was wondering if I've just got some sort of virus, but its an exhaustion which is so different to any other..... Hoping it is something like that rather than the meds.....
