Recurrent tonsilitis

Now I know the common thing in the UK is just simply taking them out but I'm possibly interested in a more holistic approach as I have been informed by some that the tonsils are important and some other European countries are not removing them anymore. Your thoughts please. For adults and children. Prevention of recurrent tonsilitis and possible downsides to tonsillectomies please!

I don't think it is that easy to have them removed these days? unfortunately my 19 year old is waiting a date to have them taken out following really acute tonsillitis over several years now. IT is supposed to be a lot more painful as an adult than a child, I rather wish they had done it earlier.

I used to get bad tonsillitis, but never suffered after I had my wisdom teeth taken out, that was what was causing mine. could that be what is causing yours.

HIya, I am interested in this since I have had several bouts of this during my life, one which I am currently just getting over...again. I am in my mid 30s...it's awful to keep getting it. I had glandular fever, and scarlet fever in my teens. These led to chronic fatigue syndrome/ME at that time.

My Dr's advise me now that my tonsils are scarred due to the amount of infections throughout my life. If we have our tonsils removed, it apparantly makes it harder to catch a different bacterial infection that can be in the body - which would normally be 'caught' or seen in the tonsils...sorry I can't remember the name of this.

I'm all for the holistic approach and have recently been looking into the chinese medical perspective of tonsillitus. They say (paraphrase from me) that the tummy or small intestine meridian/lungs are often a place of imbalance and that the throat then shows this....

Also, I have recently started practising the art of Qigong, energy healing for the self, and I have to say that this time round I am pleasantly surprised that my normal 3 weeks long of illness has been greatly reduced into almost under 1 week. It's been a huge help. I am also looking into the whole digestion/tummy and other aspects. There is a line of thought which says if you feel your creativity is being stifled, it comes out as throat infection.
HTH, just my tuppence

I had acute tonsilitis when I was 17. Then I had tonsilitis or pharyngitis every other month or so for about 6 months and nothing since (around 10 years). My tonsils are heaving scarred (so much so that the last time I had it they just went purple instead of all the white streaks).

I had my wisdom teeth removed as well.

I CANNOT have my tonsils removed as I have reflux and am at serious risk of bleeding out because of it. I also now have obstructive sleep apnea (snore horrendously without my machine). They said the heavy scarring could be part of the reason but I can't have them removed so now I have a CPAP machine.
