roseola infantum,anyone heard of it?

id never heard of it,but it looks like dd has it.
she started with a high temp on saturday.and she was so grouchy so i just thought its a combination of the weather and her teething.
dosed her up on calpol, wet her down with a flannel etc,had a fan on her,but temperature was still going up.
sunday she was the same, but seemed more like herself.we carried on with the calpol to try to get the temp down.
yesterday, much the same so we put her on her back up medicines (she has cf and goes on back up if she gets an infection)
today she woke up covered in a red rash.took her to see teh gp,he said he couldnt diagnose what it is,but its definately viral, could be chicken pox, measles or roseola infantum.
if its roseola, because of the high risk of developing hepatitis or pneumonia,dd could be taken into hospital.
but they dont seem to be worried about it jsut yet.
thing is theyve worried me something chronic!!she already has liver and lung probs so any further problems with either would be bad for her.
jsut wondering if anyone has had their child get this and what happened.
sorry,i know im panicking, but its a case of lack of sleep and not knowing if she'll be ok!!

dd had roseola when she was just 1 - she had the most horrendous high temperatures (a feature of the illness apparently) and it is the one and only time I have ever called a doctor out! Her eyes were rolling back into her head - it was awful. I can't remember how long it lasted but once the rash came out, she did start to get better and the very high temp disappeared. She was completely fine afterwards and no possible complications were ever mentioned to us.

I really hope your dd is over the worst of it now. It is a horrible virus and I really hope you escape any of those comlications that you've mentioned.

mell2 · 18/07/2006 14:21

Just what i was thinking - feel sorry for anyone that is not well in this heat.

When do you have to take her back to GP?

SoupDragon · 18/07/2006 14:25

BabyDragon has had a high temperature and now a red rash - I assume the GP this morning would have mentioned roseola? He just said "viral". Not that it matters a huge amount since she has a rash now.

buffythenappyslayer · 18/07/2006 14:27

gp said to take her back if she gets any worse.
rang her cf nurse and she told me to ring her tomorrow to let her know how she is and if im worried to take her straight to hospital.
im really hoping its chicken pox or measles, but like you said, the high temp is one of the main symptoms of roseola.
her temp isnt as high today, when i took it an hour ago it was 38.2 (its been between 39.1 and 40.2) so it is down to what it was.but again,i cant tell if its the virus causing her temp to rise or the heat.

its 'slap cheek syndrome;'. my ds1 had it, passed in a few days. nothing serious as far as i know.

cx

foxinsocks · 18/07/2006 14:44

erythema infectiosum (parovirus B19) is slapped cheek

don't think/know if roseola infantum has another name

buffythenappyslayer · 18/07/2006 14:50

ive looked in a babycare book ive got and it says in there about the hepatitus and pneumonia risks in children with suppressed immune systems.
think i will take her to the hospital tomorrow to see her cf nurse.i cant risk her getting liver or lung problems.
maybe im just over panicking!!

OP posts:
buffythenappyslayer · 18/07/2006 14:51

they will be able to do a blood test to see if it is roseola.
if its just chicken pox or measles,i dont think there are any added risks with them.

OP posts:
foxinsocks · 18/07/2006 14:52

well it's always better to be safe and check with the nurse

apronstrings · 18/07/2006 14:55

two of my children have had it. They were fine -if I remember correctly the temp doesn't usually last long.

Hope your dd is ok - my childrne didn't have any other health problems but for both of them this passed quite uneventfully - although one of them looked horrendous - was covevered in a really really nasty rash

apronstrings · 18/07/2006 14:57

we thought it was chicken pox to start with - but the rash doesn't blister in the same way.

My 4 yr old who had roseola really badly has shingles atm!!!( not suggesting a link - just a big sigh as we go through one after another viral illness)

buffythenappyslayer · 18/07/2006 15:00

shes had the temp since saturday.doctor said that its usually 3-4 days if its roseola.
she ahs the rash in her hair, all over her neck, face and back and some on her tummy.they are bright red.they dont look chicken poxy, and im not sure what measles look like, but these do look similar to the picture in the book.
gp said to look for blisters as that will mean its chicken pox,but they honestly dont even look like the start of them.

OP posts:
buffythenappyslayer · 18/07/2006 15:02

is roseola contagious?
a few years ago,ds1 got chicken pox at the start of the school hols,he had it 2 weeks, then dd2 got it for 2 weeks and then dd1 got it for the last 2 weeks of the hols and ds2 got it at the start of the september term!!
really hope its not going to get like that!!

OP posts:
apronstrings · 18/07/2006 15:10

yes it is - but mine didn't pass it to each other - I ggogled for more info at the time

buffythenappyslayer · 18/07/2006 15:11

never thought of googling it.
really hope it doesnt pass on.really hope dh doesnt get it!!hed be worse than the kids!!

Hi Buffy, my friends dd just had this, or suspected that is what it was. She is a paed so diagnosed herself, but dd is now fine. Did have v high temp but improved by time rash developed. My dd was around her before rash came and didn't catch it. Hope she gets better soon.x

buffythenappyslayer · 18/07/2006 17:41

thanks bobblehead.shes still grouchy but just felt her and shes more clammy than high temp now.shes been dosed up on calpol.but cant tell if shes just hot because of weather of because she has temp!!
shes getting more spots.there not sticky out ones, just flat but you can feel that they are there when you run your hand over (guess im trying to say they dont stick up in lumpy type spots like chicken pox!!heat has gone to my head aswell!!)

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 18/07/2006 17:50

I've googled it. It's apparently common inchildren Roseola or sixth disease. What you're describing sounds like what BabyDragon has. She's been miserable since Saturday and very hot since Sunday. The rash started yesterday evening on her tummy and is now all over her head and body. She's damn miserable with it!

SoupDragon · 18/07/2006 17:51

And BabyDragon has gone clammy today too Bizarre!

mell2 · 19/07/2006 12:09

buffy, how is your dd today? Hope she is ok

buffythenappyslayer · 19/07/2006 20:57

hi guys,dd still grouchy and hot,and is covered in the rash.its starting to look more like measles now though, and dd1 has started getting spots!!so looks like were going to have a fun school hols!!!

OP posts:
buffythenappyslayer · 19/07/2006 21:01

im hoping it is measles tbh,not as many other health risks as there is with the roseola for her (liver and lung probs with roseola)

OP posts:
hana · 19/07/2006 21:02

dd had roseola infantum a few years ago, she was under 2. The temps started before the rash appeared, and the rash stayed for a few days. Less than a week in total. No probs afterwords at all. Hope your dd is feeling better now
