i had this for hte first time ever on sat night, have been very stressed and then went out and had some drinks ( not more than normal on a night out )

but shit the heart racing! A quick google tells me this is a normal effect of wine - is it AGE? I have never had before

Its an awful feeling and is age related Alcohol has effects of the heart and nervous system. How fast?and How long?

FayeKorgasm · 09/12/2013 09:21

Could you be peri menopausal?

DottyDot · 09/12/2013 09:23

I get that after drinking lots of wine! It's happened for as long as I can remember, so I don't think it's necessarily an age thing? Goes after a while (maybe half an hour to an hour?) but is very annoying as I can't sleep while it's happening...

HanneHolm · 09/12/2013 09:25

dunno how fast
woke me up that night.
then had to get up early and a really busy day yesterday...

Def worsens with age. I hate it really puts me off drinking. But is a sneaky thing as doesn't happen every time and I don't think you ever can predict it. If you haven't eaten much or are dehydrated before you start it can make it worse as it messes with all the levels like potassium and sodium and this can trigger it

HanneHolm · 09/12/2013 09:27

i had never had it before

Had you eaten? Exercised? You can lower electrolytes exercising and then if you drink lower further. Its common for t to wake you as it doesn't happen usually while drinking more later when your levels are all out. My GP said a spoonful of honey before bed can help this I have never tried it!

strongandlong · 09/12/2013 09:32

I've had this for about the last 8 years or so (I'm 40). It's horrible. Wake up 3 or 4 hours after going to bed boiling hot and with my heart racing.

Any more than half a bottle of wine will set it off. It's definitely worse if I'm stressed.

I just avoid drinking too much these days - isn't worth it! I'm a bit sad about it, even though I know it's probably good for me...

HanneHolm · 09/12/2013 09:34

oh lord - hope this isn't A thing
I have been v busy and a little angry at work, drank maybe 2/3 bottle over a long evening.

OP posts:
HanneHolm · 09/12/2013 09:34

i had exercised that morning

DottyDot · 09/12/2013 09:36

not sure if it happens with other alcohol, thinking about it. Yes the being incredibly hot also goes with it - horrible really and probably partly why I tend to drink less these days - can't take the pace...

noddyholder · 09/12/2013 09:48

I get the warm thing too. Had it last night is seriously putting me off. I def get with wine more than other drinks but I really only like wine! Stress a big factor with me. that is my only explanation for it not happening every time

ihatethecold · 09/12/2013 09:50

Me too. It's only been in the last year or so.
I'm almost 40.
It must be an age thing.
I don't drink very often and it only takes a glass for it to happen. Blush

HanneHolm · 09/12/2013 10:07

a GLASS?

shit oldness is crap

My husband is 47 and wakes up in the night with palpitations if he's drunk red wine, so has stopped drinking it. Never used to be a problem.

HanneHolm · 09/12/2013 10:58

oh i also had really bad indigestion the day running up to it and after
i am DYING of a heart attack arent i?

OP posts:
noddyholder · 10/12/2013 16:19

Has it gone now?

gamerchick · 10/12/2013 16:21

Pounding heart in the middle of the night after alcohol is nearly always dehydration.

Flibbertyjibbet · 10/12/2013 16:35

Wine is one of only a few food/drink stuffs that doesn't have to state the ingredients on the label. IMO its very likely there is some additive/colourant in there that is causing this heart racing effect.

We have some wine each year brewed by a friend and it contains only grapes, he puts nothing else in it. I am hung over after 2 glasses of the stuff they sell as red wine in the shops, but can happily drink nearly a bottle of his stuff with no after effects at all, in fact I wake up in the morning completely clear headed.

So I think its something they put in the wine if its only happening with red.

Therefore I draw my own totally unscientific conclusion that its not an age thing, but rather there is something put in wine these days which wasn't a few years back.

TossedSaladsAndScrambledEggs · 10/12/2013 18:25

Alcohol can trigger paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, if it persists see your gp and they may arrange a 24hr ECG monitor to see if they can catch an episode.

But anxiety is probably a more likely cause, especially if you already are aware you are under stress.

HanneHolm · 10/12/2013 21:28

still there a bit - the burping is too - i normally burp once a year

OP I have this and actually ended up in hospital with it once as I couldn't slow it down.

Look up sinus tachycardia - for me it is late nights, booze, stress and eating late (it sucks!).

HanneHolm · 12/12/2013 06:36

Thanks. I just did. Did they monitor you?

I used to get this a lot after wine. Wine and a Chinese was my worst. I have practically given up drinking now because I could never sleep after.
Some wine has sulphites in it which I think is the culprit.
Also think I am sensitive to tartrazine which is an E number used to give blue/green colouring to food. It is in some mushy peas, so I have to eat the ones with the natural colour in now. Also MSG in a lot of Chinese take aways effects me
