hairy raised patch on baby's back

We noticed a few weeks ago that my seven month old son has a small hairy patch on his back and thought nothing of it (laughed it off he's hairy like his dad etc) i've just gone to check on him now , he' sleeping in only a nappy because of the heat and noticed that the hairy patch is slightly raised and reddish in colour. Is it a birthmark (that has just appeared) or could it be something more sinister, it's not a strawberry mark as i've seen these and it is not as red, it's trianguler in shape about 2 cm across and feels hairy/furry to the touch. Has anyone's child had something similar?

Where abouts on his back is it anthonywhatsit?

anthonykiedisbitontheside · 18/07/2006 07:31

Sorry ghosty I went to bed!
I've checked it this morning and it isn't red it must have been the light, there is a patch of hair but it isn't raised either it must have been the way he was lying I think it was his spine Do you think the patch of hair is anything to worry about on it's own, it's in the middle of his back?

my sister?s little baby has a similar patch to the one you are describing on the top of the leg. Originally she thought it was a reaction to the first vaccine as this was when it was first becoming noticable. Like a hardish raised patch, twice as big as a 50p, slightly darker but not really red or pink and "furry" to touch. Not hairy like an animal but can feel that it is covered with a light "down" I suppose, very fair, not dark hair. Her GP said it was a birthmark and time will tell how it develops. If you are concerned, bet your hv/GP to check it out for you.

Shit i've just read that it can be a sign of spina bifda when it's in the middle of the back,am panicking now.

DO NOT GOOGLE !!!!!

it is the worst thing you can ever ever do

Itis a patch of hair that is nothing to be concerned about

But do get it checked out by a doctor if you have any concerns at all

anthonykiedisbitontheside · 18/07/2006 08:41

Sorry Twig i've googled and have caused myself to panic! If it is spina Bifida it is the mildest form but i'm really worried now. He's nearly 8 months doesn't crawl properly yet and doesn't sit unaided for longer than a few seconds, he also is an extremley wriggley baby in that he tips his head right back when asleep pn his side and if you pick him up he always arches his back kind of flinging himself my dd never did this. I really am worried now. The only thing is I did have an amnio during the pregnancy wouldn't that have shown this up? Oh God i'm going to have to take him the drs asap.

Twig is right - googling medical suspicions or queries should be blocked or barred!!! -
Take your lo to the hv or Dr if you are really concerned and get good, sound advice -

Oh you poor thing, try not to worry. Best to get it checked.
Dd had a hugely hairy bot when when born and a dimple at the base of her spine, so we got an on the spot referral for SBO and she was scanned, much to her disgust and my weepy angst.
Nothing showed up.
She still has a hairy backside at three, and like your ds, was late to sit, stand, walk and crawl. She now shins up climbing frames like spiderman and will cheerfully come down BIG slides head first. Strong and nimble.
A hairy, wobbly baby is not necessarily an SBO baby
Ds was at nursery with a mum who had SBO (and was very kind when I was emoting about our scare). She had a very slightly stiff gait but NO other problems.

Thanks Marina. Coincidently it's exactly a year today that we had an amnio to see if he had any chromosomal disorders as he had renal pelvic dilatation in utero, thankfully the results were negative and he was fine at birth. July 18th not a good day here lol.

Actually I think I am overly panicking he can sit up for ages when leaning forward supporting himself with his hands and properly sit up for a few seconds (this has improved over the last two weeks), he also supports his weight extremley well on his feet sometimes when in his walker he actually stands for a while with his feet flat on the ground and his bottom out of the seat iyswim, he's also had fantastic head support since birth. The patch of hair on his back is very fine and fair and only really noticeable to the touch. Can you tell i'm trying to calm myself down lol. I will take him to the GP though to make doubly sure.
