Cluster headaches or how to get bottled oxygen in the black market

DH suffers from Cluster Headaches which normally means he has a couple of 3-4 week seasons a year when he has a series of 2-6 episodes of severe headache a day. It is different to migraine in many aspects, but the pain is also excruciating even if the episodes last around half an hour.

GP has told him that it is important to increase the levels of oxygen in his body during the attack and that she will prescribe a tank of oxygen for him to have with him, but in the mean time, she has advised him to do some exercise during the attack to get more oxygen. So... for the third night in a row DH has just gone for a run in the middle of the night, it seems to be working but I guess it would be kinder on him to get the tank ASAP.... but, doctor rang last Friday to ask him to ring her about the tank in 2 weeks time, probably by them the CH would be gone until next season so.... the question is, how do we get an oxygen tank? I'm getting fed up of the midnight runs and seeing him hitting his head against the wall just because of red tape. Any suggestions?

has she prescribed any painkillers? my bil gets these and the dr can prescribe some painkillers (will ask him what they are called) i know they are ultra expensive though and many gps won't prescribe them. cluster headaches sound awful

Chandra, that sounds miserable for you all. Have you been in touch with the migraine charity Migraine? They might have some suggestions for you. Hth.

Thanks for your posts, he had another two bad attacks in the early hours and the running didn't help but... he was finally prescribed this morning, the oxygen (although not yet here), and a medicine that he has to inject in his leg during the attack (I guess the same your BIL may be getting SEA, as they cost a fortune). So, hopefully, the pain will be under control for a while.

Thanks for the link Suedonim.

Thanks again
