I wonder if someone can advise me: I am really worried... I am on day 21 of my cycle, so there is no way that this is related to ovulation. Today I noticed very thin streaks of blood in my cervical mucus. I last had a smear in September 2012. I am really worried about what this blood could be. As a single mother of two I am anxious about my health anyway... If anyone can advise me I'd be so grateful. I will see the GP next week, but it is very difficult getting an appointment at my surgery. Thank you in advance!

Anyone? !!

Why could it not be to do with ovulation? Lots of people ovulate around then.

It could be from your cervix? Google cervical erosion

lucsnowe · 06/12/2013 23:47

Thank you, Bum Wad. Actually I've worked out I am day 24. I know when I ovulated, which was about 9 days ago. You are right about cervical erosion being a possibility. Thanks.

Yes, cervical erosion! I get this and was told when I was pregnant that I have cervical erosion. It's not very nice to see blood when you're not expecting it though, but don't worry, your smear is up to date, and you're doing the right thing getting it checked, but I'm sure it'll be fine.

lucsnowe · 07/12/2013 00:06

Thanks, white shoes. So what were your symptoms? Can you describe the cm? Sorry if tmi! Did you have it throughout cycles before your pregnancy? Do you think my smear is reassuringly up to date? Is a year not long enough for something to have gone wrong? Thanks again!

Does anyone else know anything about cervical erosion? I've googled it and I don't seem to fit the usual profile, ie I'm not pregnant, not on the pill and not a teenager! (I am 40) Can anybody comment on whether a normal cervical screen , over a year ago, is actually reassuring now? Thanks again.

There is a long period of time where there are precancerous cells. These normally show up on a smear test a long time before actual cancer, so it is unlikely to be anything to worry about, if you had one only a year ago.

lucsnowe · 07/12/2013 23:50

Thank you, shewhowines! It's just so alarming to see bleeding between periods linked to cervical cancer all over the Internet. The blood I am finding is definitely in my cervical mucus. Do you have any thoughts as to what it could be?

OP posts:
shewhowines · 07/12/2013 23:58

That's when it's quite advanced. I had cervical cancer and I didn't have any bleeding between periods. I don't think you need to worry.

I don't know what it is, but get it checked out anyway. It's extremely unlikely to be cancer.

lucsnowe · 08/12/2013 00:03

Shewhowines, I'm really sorry you had cervical cancer. I hope you are all right now? Was yours picked up by a smear?

OP posts:
shewhowines · 08/12/2013 00:03

Stop googling. You only end up worrying yourself!

shewhowines · 08/12/2013 00:07

Yes I'm ok now. It was picked up by a smear but mine was high up in the cervix, rather than at the bottom of it, which was really really unusual. Normally the precancerous cell are picked up by a smear way before it becomes cancerous.

Smears are wonderful things. I owe my life to one!

lucsnowe · 08/12/2013 00:08

I know , you are right. I did ban myself from googling symptoms about three years ago, but sometimes curiosity/desperation / anxiety get the better of me! Thank you for your support, though.

OP- the obvious answer is it could be your period coming early- if it continues.
At 40 you are possibly just on the verge of peri meno if an early meno is hereditary in your family- ( before age 45). so it could be that, but see what happens and ask dr.

lucsnowe · 08/12/2013 22:56

Thank you, variegated ivy. Early menopause isn't particularly early in my family and although I still have the blood, it isn't nearly enough for a period. But I did think at first that's what it could be. It is different really, and definitely in my cervical mucus rather than just blood on its own, like a period (sorry tmi!). So very weird, but everyone here has kept me sane this weekend and I will see gp this week. This is when mumsnet really comes into its own: I've not been able to talk my anxiety through with anyone in rl all weekend.

Hi. My bleeding was before and after pregnancy but not during. It was tiny amounts and at a variety of points in my cycle. Gp, private gynecologist and obstetrician all unbothered once they heard I'd had clear smear test. I'm 38 if that's any help!

I cannot recall whether in cm or not, sorry.

lucsnowe · 08/12/2013 23:29

Shewhowines, I've only just read your last post as I think it must have crossed with my last one, last night. So did an earlier smear miss the pre-cancerous cells if they were iin such an unusual place? Did you have any symptoms? I'm so pleased you're ok now.

Just so that people know.. If interested..! I had an appointment today at the sexual health clinic at my local hospital as there were no appointments at my surgery until January. I spoke to a nurse who did not seem concerned about my symptoms when I told her my smear was up-to-date, just as many of you on here suggested. She examined me and said all seemed ok. However when I requested a smear, she said this was not possible as I would not be allowed/entitled to one early. She was reassuring about my case and I did feel reassured. Yet now I am worrying whether I should get one done privately, just for peace of mind. My bleeding does seem to have stopped. But I haven't really got to the bottom of what caused it.

lucsnowe, I would go and see my GP, I think, in your shoes. Just for a dose of peace of mind Smile

shewhowines · 11/12/2013 20:22

That's good news. I'd second going to the doctor just to make sure and for peace of mind.

Yes, precancerous cells may have been present at my previous smear but they weren't picked up because it wasn't in the usual place. It's a good job I didn't delay my last smear. Smile I hadnt had any symptoms and fortunately it was early stages.
