Coughing and reflux - adults

Bagofapples · 06/12/2013 13:41

I have had a cough since May and have been back and forth to the GP since then. I have been given various inhalers and antibiotics and nothing has helped to get rid of the cough.

When I went to a different GP today, she said that it might be reflux and has prescribed omeprazole and advised getting some gaviscon.

I had heard about reflux in babies, but not adults. I am not getting any pain, the cough is the only real annoying symptom. She did say it was common after pregnancy (DC3 is 14months).

Does anyone else suffer from this and have they found this drug helpful? What other things can I do to ease the cough now that I have a diagnosis?

(I have also been booked in for a chest x-Ray next week to rule out anything else)

TIA

My DF has been diagnosed with this. I don't know what drug he was given but whatever it is has really helped, so I hope you get some relief.

Thanks Angela.

Do you know if he has made any other changes other than the prescribed drugs? Has he cut out certain foods or drinks? I am reluctant to stop my coffee habit but I gather caffeine can aggravate reflux.

I have reflux.
With my diet, I have cut out certain foods and drinks that seem to be triggers -certain brands of coffee, certain alcohol and not drinking lots, and a few other foods, including no high fat foods. To find the food/drinks it was a case of keeping a diary and if I had reflux. I also have to control my portion size.
I was also advised to stop smoking (had already stopped) and keep an eye on my weight so I don't become overweight as this is a trigger in some people.

I am worse at night, although do have daytime reflux. So I don't eat for at least 3 hours before I go to bed. For the last hour or so I stick to sips of water.

Thank you optimusic, that is really helpful. I will start a food diary.

Do you take medication for your reflux or is it something you can control with your food and drink choices?

Thanks

Sorry, been doing RL. No, he hasn't had to change but he is only a moderate drinker of (horribly weak) tea and coffee anyway. I reckon you could cut down rather than cut it out altogether.

Thanks for getting back to me, I really appreciate it.

It sounds as if I am going to have to monitor my diet quite carefully for a while to work out what the culprits are.

I have this too but I get heartburn and a horrible trapped wind pain in my shoulder as well. GP has just doubled my Omeprazole prescription and advised me to keep a diary too. I'm really interested to know what other people's triggers are.

I had a really awful night coughing all night last night, despite starting the medication and taking loads of gaviscon as recommended by my GP.

I am feeling dreadful today and also really anxious about eating anything in case I aggravate things further.

Can anyone else offer some words of wisdom?
