Anyone else talk to themselves when very cross?

I mentioned that I do to my HV, and she is really concerned that it is an obsession and a sign of serious mental disorder!

I have had to reassure her over and over, that I know I'm not talking to anyone else, I can stop when I want to, it doesn't affect how I relate to the kids etc...

Am I odd for doing this? I don't feel odd, but I suppose that really odd people never do.

mutters to self< MN is really going downhill with all these anti HV nutters.

trinityrhino · 17/07/2006 13:49

I do it too, ignore your HV, gosh some are really weird

JessaJam · 17/07/2006 13:51

there was a whole thread the other day on what people's inner voices sounded like...

HVsAreLoopy · 17/07/2006 13:53

I must have missed that.

Hee Hee

you are not alone i frequently talk to myself under a number of circumstances eg standing in sainsbury saying to myself OOO what will i get for the tea .... and so much more too

Blimey bit of an over reaction from the HV

Please be reassured it is not a sign of psychosis or any manifestation of a mental illness

Anyway i reckon i am one of the most sensible person i know and i trust my own judgement so why not ask myself...o and i had fish and chips for tea

I'm not anti HV, I quite like the woman, however I have been a little put off by her asking if I had given any thought to weaning baby yet (13 weeks)

inner voice thread link here

JessaJam · 17/07/2006 13:56

best way to handle HV seems to be to smile sweetly at majority of their suggestions and then pretty much ignore them...!?

HVsAreLoopy · 17/07/2006 13:58

Thanks JJ, that's interesting to see. So I'm probably not borderline psychotic then?

A bit cross really, she has made me feel really strange about it.

I do Well I thought everyone did. Blimey, after all these years alone all day with pre-schoolers, some days I think it's a wonder I haven't lost the plot all together!

Top marks to your HV for coming up with that to worry you about. God what are they like?!

HVsAreLoopy · 17/07/2006 13:58

Don't tell Hunker what she said about weaning, Hunker will explode!

Oh, I do this and it's getting worse -mutter under my breath about silly people blocking the aisles in the supermarket and so on. Am turning into my mother!

HV mad as a hatter, bet she talks to her invisible friends all the time.

iota · 17/07/2006 14:00

I have never needed to talk to myself, as I talk to the cat.

He's a very good audience and never says anything stupid

Greensleeves · 17/07/2006 14:02

What? Silly cow Honestly, where do they breed HVs?

Am sniggering at the image of you all chuntering away to yourselves, you grumpy lot

Enid · 17/07/2006 14:02

I talk quite openly to myself

always have done since a child

HVsAreLoopy · 17/07/2006 14:05

I have too. That's what I was trying to explain to her, this isn't a post-baby thing, I have always done this. but she just sat on my sofa looking gentle and sympathetic.

She seemed most concerned when I said I do it in public sometimes. But are there any genuinely interesting people out there who never ever utter a word without another cogitating adult present and listening? Really? Is it any madder than saying prayers, or humming?

OP posts:
edam · 17/07/2006 14:07

LOL at Enid's quite openly ? does that mean you discuss your views on sex , politics and religion?

I hum to myself too when I'm busy - sometimes realise I'm doing during a phone conversation if I have to hunt for the right bit of paper or something.

iota · 17/07/2006 14:09

how about when driving? hurling abuse at other drivers, who obviously can't hear you, is very theraputic IME

Well if you're losing it then so are we. Anyway it shows you have depth and lots going on in your brain.

I have always done it too - I can't believe no-one else chats to themselves. Not ever.

aragon · 17/07/2006 14:14

Do it alot. Drives DH mad - says it's a sign of insanity and he's noted that I do it more so when stressed. Have to say it's because I can be sure of a reasoned discussion that way and not a "solution" from hubby or "pull yourself together".

HVsAreLoopy · 17/07/2006 14:18

I knew you lot would make me feel better.

PinkTulips · 17/07/2006 14:21

i've done this my whole life, product of being an only child i think. even when younger i'd talk to myself even if there were other people around. find it easier to process information if i say it out loud so i sort of narrate most of what i do... probably intensly annoying to those around me but i keep it to a low mutter most of the time.

no-ones ever called me crazy... but then crazy people are rarely called crazy to their faces are they?

also have running conversations with pets and furniture.

TinyGang · 17/07/2006 14:24

Lol at having running conversations with furniture.

Actually come to think of it so do I! I can get very Basil Fawlty with inanimate objects when they won't work.
