what's going on with my eye?

I wear contacts and recently woke up with so much sleep in them and it was blood shot. Took out the contacts and it was pink for a few days but calmed down now with a slight not right feeling with it. Even though my contacts are out i'm still getting alot of sleep and crust round my eye, anyone have a clue what it is?

Sounds like an infection of some sort, what type of lenses do you wear?

helzapoppin2 · 03/12/2013 17:37

It's conjunctivitis.you can either go to the docs who will give you antibiotic eye drops, or there are OTC drops called Brolene you can buy from the chemist.
It's an infection which causes all those symptoms, so you will have to be scrupulously clean with your contacts, maybe wear specs until it goes. It can also be infectious so you're not supposed to share towels. Wash them anyway. Hope it clears up soon!

Oh yuck, not nice will go to chemist first thing. Will they give me the drops if I say I have an eye infection?

I've had the lenses out for a few days now, it does look better but will keep them out until it clears. I best put fresh ones in once it goes.

I wear monthly contacts, sleep with them in, I though perhaps it was our heating and coal fire that caused it?

I wear monthly lenses and wouldn't dream of sleeping with them in, your eyes would never be getting a break or enough oxygen.

Perhaps don't use the pair you had in because they will be infected, and give your eyes a break every now and then.

Thjs happened coincidentally to a friend and he too slept with his in...he hasn't been able to wear lenses for years now.

helzapoppin2 · 03/12/2013 18:56

Yes, Brolene isn't a big deal. They will just give you them over the counter. If they don't clear it, then it's a trip to the docs for something stronger.

It's one of those really contagious infections so you could have picked it up from anywhere, but it should clear up soon. Good news that your contacts are disposable.

babyrose · 03/12/2013 20:25

Contacts lenses that I have you can sleep with them in but yes I agree your eyes do need a break.

I hope it does clear up soon I hate wearing glasses!

If you sleep in your contact lenses and have woken up with a red eye you must book to see your optometrist for a checkup. This is so they can look on the microscope to check the cause and when it is safe to resume contact lens wear and whether the type of lens you are wearing needs changing.
Don't self prescribe, you must get your eye checked properly. Ring in the morning.

babyrose · 03/12/2013 20:51

Thereisaplace, yes I think that would be the best thing to do I worry just incase there damage been done (unlikely) but they will know better than anyone.

Are these new contact lens' - after 30plus years of wearing contacts I had some new monthly lens' which were fine for the first couple of months, but then I started to get red and dry eyes, after many trips to opticians ruling out infections etc found out I was allergic to the silicon that the lens' were made of. I have always worn hydrogel lens' and these new ones were made of silicon hydrogel. I did a search on internet forums and it seems this is quite common, especially if you have worn the hydrogel ones for years. Hope this helps
