Can breast cancer hurt?

I have one breast which has been painful on and off for 18 months. It's not cyclical pain and I can't feel a lump, though can feel lumpy breast tissue. I saw a lovely top consultant when it first happened and she thoroughly examined me, u/s and mammo all clear.

Tonight I am panicking. It feels a bit swollen (numb?), just a bit different. It looks normal, maybe a bit pinky in one place but maybe that's coincidental. It also feels lumpy, tho af is due on Wednesday so it could be my paranoia.

Does anyone know if bc can start this way, and take 18 months to become apparent? My consultant 18 months ago said I had no increased risk of bc in the painful breast. My mum had bc but that was a hard large painful lump. My nipple is also sensitive.

Shall I go back and ask for other tests?

I don't know I'm afraid but I will be interested to see if there are any replies because I've been having a bit of pain myself (and my mum had BC).

Thanks because it sounds scary....

Whenever there are changes I would have thought it best to go and have it checked out. better be safe than worry and worry , not do anything about it and hope it goes away.

Go and get checked out. Did you mean your mum's was painless? BC lumps are usually immovable.

Worriedkat · 02/12/2013 17:22

Mums was painful but hard and immovable too. It mimicked a cyst hence her diagnosis was delayed.

I just wondered whether a slightly pink tender breast with no lump is important. Maybe it's because I keep poking it to see if I can feel any lumps! I would've thought that breast cancer would not take 18 months to kick off?

I've known 2 friends have bC misdiagnosed. One didn't survive. So do get checked.

A useful article?.

Worriedkat · 02/12/2013 18:14

I will get rechecked . I'm not sure I'll get another referral though, as I don't have anything new to tell the GP ( symptoms pretty similar to 18 months ago).

Thanks for the article link. I went through similar discussion with the consultant as thought it might be inflammatory bc, but u/s was clear. No biopsy as no obvious place to do it, no thickening or dimpling. Still none of that.

Best wishes am sure it's nothing to worry about. I had a scare recently but turned out to be another cyst.

Worriedkat · 02/12/2013 19:49

Always a bit unnerving isn't it? I've just had another look and all looks normal Confused

Probably hormonal? AF's due for me and mine are sore.

Read this for the main signs that you should get investigated by a doctor.
