Anybody's DS had a Micturating Cystourethrogram (MCUG)?

DS has been diagnosed with duplex kidneys, and the next step is an MCUG. Just wondering if anybody else's DS had had one, and how it was for them....

Bump!

dandycandyjellybean · 14/07/2006 21:48

Sorry no, bump again.!!!

Laura032004 · 15/07/2006 11:22

Bump again just in case I thought this was quite a common procedure when kidney problems were suspected?

We've just got an appointment for something else - a nuclear medicine renal MAG3 renogram. Getting our moneys worth from the NHS!

Laura - think dd had the MCU thingy. Is it the one with catheter/dye/x-ray? If so it was OK, didn't take long and I don't remember her having to be still for too long. Her's was clear (ultrasound too) thankfully so we didn't have to go on to the next step. How old is your ds?

Good luck with it.

SpaceCadet · 15/07/2006 11:28

how old is your ds?

delllie · 15/07/2006 11:37

My DS had this done when he was 7 months old and the 'nuclear' one, a DMSA test I think it was called. He got a little upset during the MCUG, but soon got over it, and he was sedated for the DMSA test (they have to be very still for that test or it does not work), unfortunately in his case the tests showed severe urinary reflux which had already damaged one of his kidneys. He had a small operation when he was 14 months old, which completely cured the reflux. He is 8 years old now and absolutely fine!! My DD also had the MCUG done around 10 months old, just to rule urinary reflux out as it very common amongst siblings but her tests came back clear, however she does have reflux, but at the other end

Beetle73 · 15/07/2006 12:39

Yes. DD had retrograde cystography at about 6 months and it was fine. Didn't seem to bother her at all. Also had kidney ultrasound. Then at 1 year she had DMSA scan and another ultrasound. Harder to keep her still, but not a big deal really. Like Dellie's DD she has urinary reflux, and will have further tests once she's continent.

Hope it goes well for you Laura.

Laura032004 · 15/07/2006 15:50

DS is 2 weeks old now, so will be 4 weeks old when the test is done.

The kidney problems were diagnosed in utero, and he's already had an ultrasound since being born. Apparently one side of duplex kidneys looks fine, but one might already have a blockage. He's taking prophylactic antibiotics now.

saggarmakersbottomknocker - I know one of them involved a catheter and dye to check for reflux, and I think one will involve radioactive dye going into his arm.

delllie - glad to hear the op sorted things for your DS

Thanks for all the replies, it's good to know that they're not too distressing for them.

I am having one next week. Will let you know how it was

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 15/07/2006 16:48

Laura - dd took prophylatics (trimethoprim?) for quite some time. I don't think you'll find it too bad for him at 4 weeks, hopefully if they catch him at a sleepy time he'll lie beautifully still. Good luck!

QueenEagle · 15/07/2006 16:52

dd had a duplex kindney which was diagnosed just before she was 3 years old. She was very, very poorly right from when she was born and had the micturating test. iirc it involves radioactive dye being injected into them and they watch how it travels around the urinary tract and kidneys. I think they might also watch them whilst they wee as well.

How did they dx your ds's duplex kidneys without one? Will they operate?

dd had her kidney surgery almost as soon as they found out it was duplex, as a matter of urgency.

QueenEagle · 15/07/2006 16:59

ah sorry laura, didn't read your post about dx in utero.

In dd's case she had repeated severe kidney and urinary infections which kept her in and out of hospital for much of her first 3 years. These infections caused so much scar tissue on the kidney it had almost rendered it useless and this is what was making her so ill. I lost count of the amount of times she had IV's. She was also on prophylactics for years after. Once she had the surgery however, she was a different child. She went back to playgroup within 4 days! I have to say though, she took it all in her stride and wowed all the staff on the wards!

Are they talking about surgery for your ds? It isn't as bad is it seems really.

SpaceCadet · 15/07/2006 17:55

ive had all these tests but noit as a child, my kidney defect was not discovered until adulthood although i was born with it.
Micturating cystourethrogram is where a catheter is placed into the bladder and contrast liquid that will show up on X-ray is put into the bladder. X-ray pictures are then taken during urination to show reflux happening it doesnt take very long.
intravenous urogram, where they inject a contrast dye into the blood stream, then watch it as it flows through the kidneys, bladder etc, will be the next step, depending on what the first test shows up.

Laura032004 · 16/07/2006 13:42

saggarmakersbottomknocker - yes, DS is on trimethoprim as well.

QueenEagle - they spotted something was wrong before he was born, and followed up with a scan at 3 days old. They still aren't 100% about the diagnosis, hence they're doing the further tests. Sorry to hear that your DD suffered for so long, that must have been awful. I think the hope for DS is that if he keeps on with the prophylactic a/b's, then he won't get the UTI's, won't get the scar tissue, and hence won't need an op. Apparently if they can keep it under control, they 'grow' out of the problem. Fingers crossed anyway.

Luckily (if that's the right word!) DS1 has already had to have surgery to bring his testicles down, so I'm not too worried about him having to have an op (although he's much younger - DS1 was 2 before they did anything to him).

CountessDracula - hope all goes well for you next week

SpaceCadet - I think he's actually having the second test you mention at the same time. Hope he'll stay quiet for long enough. We've been told to expect to be in there for two hours.

Laura - I think it's good they are on to things when he is so tiny and that he is on the ab's too. Seems that this will prevent any further problems developing for him. btw the worst thing about the tests is the boredom factor and keeping them absolutely still.

The reason my dd's was not diagnosed earlier is becasue nothing showed up on the antenatal u/s scans but then, I guess they weren't looking for anything as she was my 1st. With my subsequent pregnancies, they paid extra attention to the kidneys but lucklily all my ds's were fine.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you that all goes well and that things are not as bad as you fear.

Heartmum2Jamie · 16/07/2006 18:38

My ds had a MCUG done after having 2 UTI's, it was quite easy, they have to lie still for 30 minutes, so nap time would be good. The longest bit was waiting for the dye to circualte the system, about 1 1/2 hours. He was also on trimethoprim for about 15 months, it was fine.
