I've got to have one after Christmas.

I did not vomit or have a sore throat either time.

Interesting thread.

I am booked in for an op in a couple of weeks - so am pleased to hear that recovery can be quite swift.

(although I don't have very young DC so will be able to lie around watching tv a lot)

The sore throat did remind me that once I did which was unusual and just assumed whoever pushed the breathing tube into me had been a bit rough. It didn't last long and was not painful just uncomfortable. But I usually slept for hours afterwards being woken up by the nurses taking my BP as it does sink during a GA and has to be back to normal before you can be discharged.
Good luck and have a lovely sleep/rest afterwards. Flowers

I had one a year ago for an emergency procedure. I was 9 weeks pregnant so wasn't expecting a GA at all and didn't find out til I was taken down to theatre.

Was a bit scary as I had no idea what the risks were - the anaesthetist was too busy to come and see me pre op. Woke up and last year's John Lewis ad was on the radio so o cried and cried and cried.

Couldn't work out why I had a really bad sore throat for the next few days til I realised I'd had a tube down my throat! Was quite sick the morning after but couldn't say if that was GA or morning sickness.

I think given that you know what's happening in advance and will know risks, consequences etc then I'm sure you'll be fine. I had been hoping for a spinal for the procedure but im hindsight I'm glad I was under for it. I don't want to know what they had to do to me!

I had one last year and it was quite nice - the anaesthetist said they called the anaesthetic "gin and tonic" and it gave me a lovely cool feeling like drinking a nice g&t. And then I woke up, not especially groggy, just a few minutes and I felt fine. It was only a small procedure though.

Mosschops30 · 30/11/2013 20:44

As an ex anaesthetic nurse I can say they are very safe and I would rather have a GA than be awake for anything.

I had my mirena put in under GA, I wasn't even intubated they just maintained my airway Smile it was a very pleasant experience.
I had PTSD meaning the anaesthetist had to get me to sleep in record time so it was very quick indeed.
Unless you require a lot of analgesia you shouldn't feel nauseous, but your anaesthetist will have it covered don't panic Smile

I was out for three hours, which I think is quite long, two weeks ago. I may be sad but I really enjoyed it. I felt like a cosy little princess when I woke up and everyone was looking after me. And I was fine next day, apart from the operation site which was not the anaesthetics fault.

princessalbert · 13/12/2013 10:43

I had a GA on Wednesday - it was fine.

I believe they only used a fairly light dose - as it was a quick procedure. I was a bit nervous beforehand -but it was totally fine - didn't even go woozy - just went out.

Woke up bright and alert, no wooziness after at all. In fact, I was hoping for some sleeping after - as I was knackered but couldn't sleep that night either.

Two days on and I feel fine - a little tired, and my stitches are pulling. But I managed to clean the bathroom yesterday and have been putting the laundry on etc. (am letting DH run around after me as much as I think I can get away with though!)

So OP - nothing to worry about. Hope you procedure goes well.

I had a GA 2 weeks ago for an op to remove my gallbladder.
Went down @ 5.30pm and was back in my room @ 6.20pm.
Had a sore/dry throat when I woke up but kept sipping water which helped (I had a tube down)
No nausea (they give you drugs whilst you are still under)
Was a bit tired for 2 days.
Good luck x

MrsChristmasBungle · 14/12/2013 12:33

I find them ok although I appear to have a tendency to cry when I come round - no idea why.

My ds has had them at 3 weeks old and at 18 months old - he was totally fine too.

Sunflower49 · 14/12/2013 15:27

I'm grateful for this thread. I might have to have one soon,I've never had one before and I'm having all sorts of irrational fears like not waking up again, waking up under, or other variations of it not working!

I'm glad you're getting reassurance, OP and hope it goes well!

LittleBlueMouse · 14/12/2013 15:51

I had a GA five weeks ago for a minor op, so not under for long. I came round quickly. I had a sore throat and felt a bit spacey for several hours, but not sleepy. Still a bit tearful and generally felt a bit subdued for about a week after. Not sure if feeling depressed is a common side effect but it was short lived.

Good luck with your op

MyNameIsWinkly · 14/12/2013 15:57

I had a GA just over 2 years ago when I had my gallbladder out. I was very disorientated, tired and talked shite for a few hours after I came round. Had one a few months ago for an ERPC, woke up bright as a button, had a good cry, had some toast and squash and went home right as rain.

lobsterkiller · 14/12/2013 19:47

Had my Gallbladder out in 2010, best sleep ever...woke up tripping my face off and my throat was sore due to the tube. I was a bit out of it for the rest of the day but was fine after a night's sleep.

trinity0097 · 14/12/2013 21:17

I had one on Wednesday. Was fine! Woke up crying, but that soon passed after they gave me some more pain relief! I was out for about 30min. Felt a bit woozy the mr men poster above my head started swirling - was already blurred as they had taken my glasses off - then the next thing I remember was them giving me a tissue and telling me I was OK in the recovery room.

I felt fine on Thursday, but did sleep for 11 hours on Thursday night, I also have had to sleep in the day yesterday and today after lunch, but that to be honest is what I would normally do at the time of year - I'm a teacher and have been running on empty for the last few weeks, we broke up on Wednesday! I've been working hard recently so was due some enforced rest!

If I was more mobile I'd probably feel more awake, lying on the sofa makes you sleepy! Leg has had to be elevated for 72 hours!
