I have high cholesterol (6.6) and the bad part (L.D.L) is twice as high as as is recommended at 4.7. My weight and B.P is fine and I thought I had a healthy diet! Have already started on porridge for breakfast and bought some Benecol spread and yoghurt drinks.Just wondered if any one has successfully lowered theirs significantly and if so how?

does it matter much?

mine is similar. I am not that bothered

there is a link to low vit d so maybe worth checking. also a link to hypothyroidism if you have that?

The G.P seems to think so..have been for a 'consultation' with a nurse at my docs surgery today and come away with a long list of foods that I am not supposed to have..all the nice things as you can imagine! Were you not pressured to follow a fat free plan ?

How old are you?

Seaoftroubles · 26/11/2013 22:28

I am 60..though I think it is a concern whatever your age.

Cholesterol level rises with age.

mercibucket · 26/11/2013 22:35

it doesnt matter much unless other risk factors are high. my gp wasnt bothered. I just got told it was high and to eat healthily. most cholesterol doesnt come from diet anyway (apparently. am no expert)

mybeautifullife · 26/11/2013 22:37

You can only lower it by 10 % with diet apparently.

mercibucket · 26/11/2013 22:44

theres a good mercola article if you google
high cholesterol myths

sorry I can't link on this phone

Seaoftroubles · 26/11/2013 23:10

That's encouraging merci, my other risk factors are good and no heart disease in the immediate family.I just didn't want to go on Statins which is likely to be recommended if i don't get it down. The important thing is that the LDL and the HDL are balanced apparently. Will have a look at the article, thanks.

Mybeautifullife I have read that you can reduce it by 20% through diet but I think you have to be pretty rigid with cutting out the bad stuff.

As your BP is normal you do not need to worry. My niece had 7, but as she has low BP and normal weight GP and other drs while she was pg didn't worry.
If you would like to try to recuce it, try eating lots of olives. You can get tasty stuffed ones. That worked for a couple of people I know.

Seaoftroubles · 27/11/2013 16:52

Thanks everyone..the general consensus here seems to be that that I don't need to worry, but you would not believe the long list of restricted foods that I have been given.Think I will just try to follow as healthy a diet as possible and cut out the really 'bad' foods plus increase the ones I know are beneficial. Hopefully that will make a bit of a difference!
